We have really been in a drought crunch this summer. I was not aware how critical it was until someone pointed out..... It's so dry in North Carolina that the Baptists are starting to baptize by sprinkling, the Methodists are giving out wet-wipes, the Presbyterians are giving out rain-checks, and the Catholics are praying for the wine to turn back into water…… Have a "chuckle" to share send it to [email protected]

Category Sports Gaetano's entered the 2007 Tournament slotted as an 8 to 1 favorite. The early odds were based on rumors that both Pat Burrell and Chase Utley would be team members of Gaetano's. Team President Alan Baker stated that Chase had never played wiffleball and Pat would struggle to adjust to the 110 MPH fastballs and because of this Baker removed both professional players from his roster and added two cooks and then hired pitcher Ed Horner. This forced the oddsmakers in Vegas to move Gaetano's up to the middle of the pack to 3 to 1. A battle is being waged by the Healy – Mc Cann's Funeral Home team making this tourney even more interesting. In the past this team died early but when Rudy Decker and several team members departed from the Etherington's Team and joined the Healy – Mc Cann's team it placed a lot of pressure on Healy's and anything short of a final four finish would be disappointing. Back this year after a 10 year layoff is Bernie's Tire. Manager Bernie Beri an aging over the hill softball player has brought along Greg Coxe to offer an infusion of young blood but did...

Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr. In the last edition of this column, I have tried sew together a few of the major changes I have seen in Japan since first arriving here 30 years ago. Yet, some things never change so the task I have set for myself is rather difficult. The Japan of yesteryear and the Japan if today may resemble each other so much on the surface, but if you take out your shovel and pick, and dig, it doesn't take long to hit the very same bedrock. And much of that stone is of gem quality. To sing but a few lines on Japanese generosity and hospitality, or Japanese sufficiency and precision or Japanese eagerness and energy seems woefully inadequate. In similar fashion, to but briefly note the heady mix of past and present does no justice to the intoxication high of Japanese culture, as potent now as it was 30 years ago. To fail to address Japan's beauty in all of its many forms-- from Mt.Fuji to kimonos to manicured gardens and more--is to miss one of the more endearing parts of life here. I admit that few societies, I imagine, are as neurotic as...

By Bill Bates NEWS Correspondent Mount Ephraim Police Chief Edward C. Dobleman announced that the department is implementing a new program to the borough. The program is called "Street Smart Is Street Safe" and will help protect our school children, school crossing guards, and the citizens of our community. Residents and business owners will be able to contact the police to help with this quest. Tragically, the pedestrian accident rate has significantly increased statewide. New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation, a situation made worse by the number of vehicles on the state's roads. For example, 30 years ago 50 percent of students walked to school. Today, 85 percent are driven to school, resulting in congestion in school zones far beyond what the streets were designed to handle. Too many drivers are distracted by eating or drinking behind the wheel, using cell phones or simply not paying attention. There are also increasing incidents of aggressive driving. Unfortunately, most unsafe driving in school zones is by drivers who use the streets most often, the parents and grandparents dropping off or picking up children. See children ahead? Don't assume they know you are coming, even if they are...

When the Camden County park was built in 1929, it was dedicated to the six soldiers killed in World War I. They planted cherry blossom trees, and a small stone marker with each soldiers name on it. On Memorial Day, the veterans marched to the park and placed a floral float in the Delaware River. The Park Commission deeded the ground back to the City in 1979 for $1. Because of the significance of a few men of the West Jersey Proprietors meeting under a Buttonwood tree for 299 years, City Council changed the name to "Proprietor's Park." How many people knew what the Proprietors were for? It is up to Gloucester City Council to decide to make the change, not the Historical Society. Why doesn't Council stand up and dedicate the park to all of our veterans, and return it to what it was? John A. Berry, Gloucester City

First off, I agree with Stephen Roche about changing the names of the streets. There is nothing wrong with the names they have. Are these people looking at all the work and tax dollars it will take to make such a "stupid" move? Gloucester has had many heroes, so how come all at once we have a few important ones? My husband about lost his life in the "real" war in the 1940s. That war was declared on the United States – it was not one man's war because someone took a pot shot at his dad. My dad served in the Navy, too. He also is a hero – he raised seven girls in Gloucester. They all turned out good and have good husbands. That took some doing, too. Maybe we could at least get the 400 block of Powell Street named John B. Spence. I do feel for these moms, dads and families that lost a loved one in Bush's war. It is really bad, but for the life of us – we cannot bring them back. This is sad. I wonder how these other families feel that lost their kids in the 40s. No one seems to...

Bill's Point of View .....................category Bills Point of View The old Sports Corner Bar, at 4th and Jersey Avenue, Gloucester City is being demolished to make way for a restaurant. The bar has been closed for nearly 20 years and soon the building will be non-existent. JK Venture Enterprises, LLC, the current property owners, have been working diligently to demolish and clean up the site in order to get it ready for their newest endeavor. A family style restaurant. JK Venture is a UEZ business trading as Tavern on the Edge. Recently approved at the June Gloucester City Planning/Zoning Board meeting, JK Venture Enterprises, LLC t/a Tavern on the Edge plans to erect a two-story restaurant/bar with outdoor dining to be completed by winter 2008. Just the mention of the name brings back some fond memories about the guys who use to hang out at the Sports Corner as it was known back in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Remember when Jackie Schules owned it? Closing time would come at 2 AM the doors would be locked and anyone still inside would stay around and have a couple beers. Sometimes we watch the sun come up. On Saturday night before...

Paul Spaventa, short in stature, faced an awesome dilemma. He had to search his soul and answer the following question: Do I dance with the devil or serve the people? Spaventa, the superintendent of Mount Holly schools, chose the latter, knowing there would be hell to pay. He persevered and within the span of two short years proved his worth by: 1. Mandating that all who serve the taxpayers of Mount Holly adopt the necessary mindset to ensure educational growth. 2. Establishing a bond — not superficial link — between home, school and community. 3. Functioning as a superintendent with a vision and driven purpose. Spaventa's resolve created discord among leaders of the Mount Holly Educational Association and some community representatives who traditionally ruled supreme. Mean-spirited tactics ate away at his soul. The Gloucester City Board of Education realized he was a godsend and provided him with an offer he couldn't refuse. He agonized over the opportunity to serve the people without dancing with the devil. Unfortunately, Spaventa will be leaving Mount Holly in mid-November. Journey onward those that put the children first — we'll miss you. Paul Bracy Mount Holly

Gloucester City has moved the German ship anchor that had been located at the old Coast Guard Base on King Street for years. It is now positioned near the entrance of the City Marina at the intersection of King Street and Jersey Avenue. The anchor was taken from a German freighter captured by the Coast Guard off of the Atlantic Coast during World War II. For 40 years or more the anchor sat at the entrance of the City Coast Guard Base. When the base was abandoned by the Coast Guard in 1986 they left the anchor. For the next 21 years the anchor remained on the property rusting away behind some high shrubs. Thinking it would make a nice addition to the City Marina the mayor and council asked the members of Union Local 711 Painters and Allied Trades AFL-CIO if they would donate their time to scrape the rust off the anchor and paint it. Photo: Two union apprentices, Krystal Carpenter and David Gregorio began the work on the project earlier this month. The job was completed last week and the anchor was moved to its new location on Wednesday (August 22) by the Public Works Department. No...

Bill, I was driving past the Gloucester City Harbor yesterday with my son and I noticed this very large anchor next to the entrance. My son was all excited about this because he is so fascinated with ships. We come to the harbor every Sunday to walk and watch the ships go past. As we get closer to the anchor my eyes notice two swastikas on each side of the anchor. These swastikas were not graffiti; they were of the original design and are welded on. I was in such a total shock I almost drove right past the stop sign. I had to turn around and take a double look. Please Please Please tell me my eyes have deceived me and tell me the new political powers have not made this awful decision to plant this anchor here for good. I am thrilled to see all the new changes being made in Gloucester City and I am really impressed with the progress so far to date but this choice seems to be a bad one. Now Bill, the swastika has had many meaning, many of which used to have a positive influence but that was until Germany and the...

Mr. Fifis, 68, was a partner with his three sons at Ponzio's in Cherry Hill. He died of natural causes Wednesday. Born in Andros, Greece, Mr. Fifis came to the United States in 1966. His three sons joined him as partners at the Route 70 restaurant in 2000. The Cherry Hill resident represented a generation of "Greek pioneers" who came to America to provide a better life for their families, said his son, Christopher Fifis of Lumberton. "He came here determined to work . . . so his family could get the opportunities he never had," said his son, noting Mr. Fifis regularly pitched in with restaurant chores. "No job was beneath him." "He died a rich man," the son added. "He died with his family around him, with a lot of love and dignity." Mr. Fifis also...

"That lease sickens me. I don't know how they got away with it, because we would like to use that land for other things," said Gloucester City Mayor William James, who describes a prickly relationship with the city's largest employer and taxpayer. By EILEEN STILWELL Courier-Post Staff News of the Holt family's proposal to Gov. Jon S. Corzine to control port operations in Camden, Salem and ultimately Paulsboro has stirred up bitter memories of the family's 40-year history on the waterfront. "Asinine" is how union leader Martin Mascuilli described replacing the South Jersey Port Corp., a quasi-state agency, with a private company run by Thomas J. Holt Sr. and his three sons. Photo Holt's Corporate headquarters is located in the former Coast Guard Base, King Street, Gloucester City "I don't know how anybody could entertain it. It would absolutely be a disaster for union labor. Jobs would be lost forever, wages and benefits would be cut," said Mascuilli, secretary/treasurer of the International Longshoreman's Association, Local 1291, the largest and most powerful union on the river. Mascuilli says he will never forgive the Holts for replacing the ILA with their own union, Dockworkers No. 1, in 1993 at the Gloucester Terminal,...

Photo: the weeds along the railroad track in front of the Gloucester City Library. Bill, I would like to start by saying that I think the Highway Department has done an outstanding job this summer maintaining all the landscaping of the city properties. I don't remember the city looking so good. They have really stayed on top of it this year and they deserve a pat on the back. My concern is the condition of the railroad property running from Essex Street to Market Street. This property is owned by CSX Transportation Inc., a privately owned corporation. They make no attempt to maintain this property and the grass is over two feet high. This is nothing new because this happens every summer. The only section of the railroad property that is maintained is the portion adjacent to Mayor James' house, because he cuts it himself. I applaud him for that and he sets a good example in doing so. However, he or any other resident should not have to do this. Could the Highway Department maintain the property and then the city bill the corporation for the work? Could the Housing Authority issue a summons to the corporation for failing...

Category Mount Ephraim By Bill Bates NEWS Correspondent According to the American Cancer Society, there were 556,902 cancer deaths in the United States in 2003, the latest information available on their website. Most likely you or someone you know has been affected by cancer. My close friend's aunt, Kathy Muendel, died 4 years ago from cancer on August 2, 2003. I had a childhood friend's father, another Mount Ephraim resident, Denny Kerper, die from cancer 7 years ago on August 10, 2000. One of my supervisors at my full-time employment battled cancer for several years and successfully beat the disease and is now healthy. PHOTO BY BILL BATES MOUNT EPHRAIM POST OFFICE ARRIVES - Shortly before 12 noon on Monday, August 5th, two large "oversize loads" were spotted on Kings Highway. To the shock of many the truck drivers transporting these large modular structures actually stopped and then slowly maneuvered their vehicles into the parking lot and proceeded to drop their cargo at the former Mount Ephraim Post Office. The "special delivery" actually arrived 5 days early as the shipment was not supposed to arrive until Friday, August 10th. Clean-up and set-up of these two large modular buildings will take several weeks. The last word that Mayor Joe Wolk received from the U.S.P.S. was the new Mount Ephraim Post Office facility is scheduled to open in mid September.

Note: This letter was published in the City News August 16, 2007 After reading the article "The Public has a Right to Know" in the August 9th edition of the Gloucester City News, I was conflicted as to Bill Cleary's intent. Was it truly to argue for keeping the community informed, or was it to argue that his newspaper should be getting the business? The reason for my conflict stems from recalling articles or opinions said author published a year ago in response to the community newsletter. At the time, the Mayor and Council instituted a monthly newsletter and an almost weekly e-mail blast to keep the residents of Gloucester City informed as to what was happening in the community. This newsletter was sent by mail to every household in Gloucester City. Doing so ensured that every citizen would be provided with the information. At that time, the author in question stated that Mayor and Council were wasting taxpayer dollars and argued that they should use his newspaper. Now, fast forward a year, no newsletter and no e-mail blast, but an attempt by Mayor and Council to save taxpayer dollars. Utilizing Camden County's publicly advertised bid, Mayor and Council opted...

The large paintings or reprints of early Gloucester City that hung for decades on the walls of the PNC Bank in Gloucester City have been moved to the third floor of O'Hara's Pub on King Street. The bank is in the middle of remodeling their Monmouth Street office and had no further use for the pictures. Because of their historical value, Bob Bevan, (top photo) from the City's Community Relations Office, talked with PNC officials and was able to save the photos from the dumpster. Bevan said the pictures are so large the only place that had a high enough ceiling to hang the reprints was at O'Hara's. "One portrait is 5 feet wide x 20 feet long and another was 10 feet wide x 15 feet long", said Bevan Bevan added that the owner of O'Hara's is thinking about calling the third floor of the pub "The Gloucester City Room". And the City's Historical Society, located on King Street a few doors from O'Hara's, plans to have a sign made directing their visitors to the Pub to view the portraits. "This scenario is still in the talking stage; nothing has been finalized", Bevan said. Last week Bevan, Mike Niedzwadek...
