Gloucester wins softball title
Taylor Chain pitched an eight-inning shutout and Kelly Cerrone scored on a ground ball for the only run Gloucester needed to take the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 1 softball championship, 1-0, over visiting Pennsville. yesterday.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cerrone singled and went to third base on Sam Dobleman's single. On Jackie Leafey's ground ball to second base, Dobleman was tagged out, but the throw home was late in a close play as Cerrone scored.
Chain, a sophomore righthander, struck out two, walked none and allowed three
hits as the top-seeded Lions (24-3) beat second-seeded Pennsville (19-5) for the
third time this season. more
