Writer says cost to operate fire department is high Just to enlighten people on approximately what it cost to have a full time paid company since that person thinks its only a couple dollars a month. Contact the City Administrator and find out what the true budget of the Fire Department is compared to what the Municipal budget is. The Fire Department budget would be close to if not more than $3 million a year, roughly $2 million spent on salaries. If you divide that with the number of homes in town (check with the tax people they have that number) is about 5,000 - which comes to roughly $600 a year of your property taxes going towards the Fire Department if they only spend $3 million; which is about 30% of your municipal budget. (Maybe the GCN should do a article about it to clarify figures and compare it...

Dooley's Bar Comes Tumbling Down; Cost to the taxpayer $34,400 The empty tavern/restaurant, owned by Gerald F. Dooley Inc., at the corner of Broadway and Cumberland Street , City, has been demolished. Hired to do the work was Franchi Demolition & Excavating, Inc. from Camden, the low bidder, at a cost of $34,400. The city purchased the building in October for $425,000. The intricate details of the purchase was never released to the public. Supposedly it is to be the future home of Reel Fish Seafood, now located in Bellmawr. Newly elected Mayor William James was asked today if he knows anything about the transaction? He said as of yet he hasn't looked at the arrangements made by former Mayor Kilcourse. And added there have been so many issues that this (Dooley transaction) wasn't at the top of the list. In fairness to Mayor James, Councilmen Brophy and Marchese they...

Jack on Jack: A Look at Coaching Legend Jack Pyrah BY JACK HEATH Near the shadow of the Walt Whitman Bridge in Gloucester City, NJ resides one of the best track coaches in the country. The Gift of Coaching BY JACK HEATH Weâre following in your footsteps. Cause thatâs where your footsteps go. --Ian Hunter âFollowing in Your Footstepsâ No book came closer to describing what it's like to coach a small high school cross-country team while not teaching in the school than Marc Bloom's God on the Starting Line. Still, as I finished his thoroughly enjoyable book I could not help but think there was something missing. It occurred to me exactly what it was as I stopped to pick up a stray safety pin on the grass at a cross-country meet a few days later. Only a long-term cross-country coach would stop to pick up a stray safety pin on the grass. They know they'll need the pin for race numbers eventually, while other coaches and runners probably never even notice the pins. Marc only coached for a couple of years. He overcame...

If what Mr. Gorman says is true then all receipts for the materials for the park and the reports from the testing should be on file with the city. It hasn't been that long ago that it was built. If the city doesn't have this information then the chairman of the committee to build the playground should have these records. These should be on hand at the meeting to help give intelligent answer to important questions asked at the meeting. Or do we have to have several meetings and a lawyer involved to get simple answers from documents that should be on hand. If they can't be found in time for the meeting, maybe it shouldbe rescheduled now instead wasting everyones time with answers like, "Idon't know" and "I'll have to get back to you on that". This seems to be the way every meeting in this town goes. What...

Blue Jersey Discussion For The Day Since property tax reform is going so well, I thought I'd bring attention to a Philadelphia Inquireruniversal health insurance will be considered next. As our discussion today indicates, that doesn't sound so promising. On the other hand, the current situation is bad, and reform in Washington is not likely in the short term. Senator Joseph Vitale has been working on the plan quietly for some time. Unfortunately, we're talking about over a billion dollars per year. Vitale says that if nothing is done: report that Governor Corzine says "We will have more uninsured, our costs will continue to spin out of control, employers will continue to drop coverage, people will get sicker, children will lose thousands of hours of school time, and the economy will suffer because adults have missed work because of preventable illness," said Vitale, chairman of the Senate Health Committee. "Hospitals...

Judy, What a sad and distorted picture you paint of your local firefighters. For the record I am proud to say I am a career firefighter with the GCFD and the Vice President of Local 51 of the FMBA . There are several issues that you are attempting to bring light to that really need to be clarified. First yes we do only work 8 days a month. That works out to be 24 hour shifts every four days. Those three days off that we have are usually spent working 1 or more part time jobs. I don't claim that the money we make from this job is in any way bad but it won't be making any of us rich anytime soon. I myself work parttime as a Paramedic and I also teach several classes for various organizations. This leaves very little time for my wife and three children....

One day, a diver was enjoying the aquatic world 20 feet below sea level. He noticed a guy at the same depth he was, but he had on no scuba gear whatsoever. The diver went below another 20 feet, but the guy joined him a few minutes later. The diver went below 25 feet, but minutes later, the same guy joined him. This confused the diver, so he took out a waterproof chalkboard set, and wrote, "How the heck are you able to stay under this deep without equipment?" The guy took the board and chalk, erased what the diver had written, and wrote, "I'm drowning, you moron!"

GLOUCESTER CITY-The dilapidated Three Corner Park at the intersection of Burlington and Middlesex Streets, has recently been brightened up with brand new equipment. The old playground equipment at the former $100,000 park built in the 1980's wasn't maintained. Broken down swings, park benches unfit for anyone to sit on, and the rusted sliding boards were unsafe for the kids to use. The park was surrounded by weeds and debris. The run down condition of park was featured on ClearysNotebook in August and September 2006. It is nice to see the City paid attention to our remarks and fixed the problem. Now it is up to the people in the neighborhood to make sure that vandals don't destroy it.

When East Meets West With Foreign Friendly Japanese Food! Commentary by Hank F. Miller Jr. A Current campaign for foreigners to visit Japan, with a slogan of, “eat Japanese friendly food in hopes, “to promote foreign tourist traffic to Japan." I would like to do my part in the campaign by suggesting changes to the country to make it more attractive to foreigners. More foreigners would come to Japan if, for example, the food were a little more international-friendly. After the Americans invented the California roll-a sushi roll made more palatable to their taste by adding avocado. Every country changes international food to some extent to fit their people's tastes. The U.S.has done the same with Tex-Mex (Texas influenced Mexican food), and in Japan, you're likely to find raw fish among your Italian food. This is called "fusion" food, where seemingly incompatible foods are fused together, creating an explosion that...

New Jersey NEWS Round-Up Wednesday, January 24 Rep. Donald Payne was named subcommittee chair for Africa and Global Health. The latest Quinnipiac University poll on property taxes finds that 67% think meaningful property tax reductions this year are unlikely. They oppose selling (or leasing) the Turnpike 53-34 and are split 46-46 on public worker benefit cuts. The poll also finds a majority against eliminating the death penalty, but also a majority preferring life without parole for murderers. Senator Frank Lautenberg turned 83 yesterday. Imagine having to spend your birthday listening to George W. Bush! Reps. Steve Rothman and Rush Holt posted...

Council also gives an overview of the Committee happenings. Both are public meetings and the public has a few minutes in the opening of the meeting to ask questions or address the council. It does have a time limit on it. The GCN attended a few of these meetings and then stopped. As far as Dooley's goes, I think the whole thing of buying it and the price to be paid/paid was...

WHEN EAST MEETS WEST AND THEN SOME Commentary By Hank F. Miller Jr. (Hank is a former resident of Gloucester City who now lives in Japan where he operates an English language school.) Me talk eigo (English) some day ,I hope. Back in the good old days, say up until 15 or 20 years ago, English conversation was mainly studied here at THE MILLER ENGLISH SCHOOL,by college students, international travelers, researchers and employees about to be transfered overseas.
