New superintendent Joseph Rafferty has officially started his tenure in the Mount Ephraim School District.

Rafferty was appointed in July to replace outgoing Chief School Administrator Richard Serfling, who will be retiring in December. He joined the district on November 1in the role of transitional superintendent/principal, a position he will hold for the next two months. He will fully assume all duties on January 2, 2007

Serfling reported at last week’s Board of Education meeting that he has enjoyed working with Rafferty for the last few weeks, as the new head administrator familiarizes himself with the district.

Rafferty said he is impressed with both the dedication of the staff and the rapport between the students and teachers.

“I am proud to be a part of this district,” he said.

A resident of Gloucester City, Rafferty previously worked as a teacher at Gloucester Catholic High School for nine years, before accepting a teaching position in the Gloucester City School District. He then served as a grant writer and assistant principal of the Mary Ethel Costello School in that district before moving on to become Principal of the Rohrer Middle School in Haddon Township.

Rafferty will have a five-year contract with the school board and receive an annual salary of $112,500.

The board also approved a new contract with Mike Profico, who will be replacing Mary Lou Hirshmiller as principal/supervisor of curriculum. After spending 34 years with the district, Hirshmiller will be retiring at the end of the year. Profico’s contract will run from January 1, 2007 until July 2010.

In other matters, Linda Marszalek was approved as a lunch aide for the Mary Bray School. Beverly Jatzke will serve as a substitute classroom aide and Jeannine McGarvey as a substitute classroom/lunch aide for the remainder of the year.

Rich and Judy Bonzak were also approved to volunteer in the Mary Bray School computer lab for the rest of the year.

The Board will hold their next regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 11 in the media center of the Kershaw School, Black Horse Pike.
