Son of former Gloucester City Lettercarrier
Courier Post-In a playoff game last week, Tony Thornton Jr. unleashed such a powerful tackle against DePaul Catholic that Bishop Eustace Prep School football coach Tim McAneney is convinced it changed the game.
"He made a hit on the kickoff, which is the reason why we scored 20 straight points," McAneney said about the 27-26 win for the Crusaders. "No one wanted to catch the ball anymore -- he was taking people's heads off."
Thornton Jr. might have gotten that from his father, Tony Thornton Sr., who was known as "The Punching Postman" during his highly successful professional boxing days. Thornton Sr. is a former lettercarrier who worked out of the Gloucester City Post Office before becoming a supervisor at the Bellmawr Sectional Center in the Bellmawr Industrial Park.
