The New York Times has a boring story that rehashes all the idiotic themes for why we have a property tax problem in the tri-state area, but as a public service they have pulled together the median home price, median property taxes and property taxes per $100,000 of home value for more than 450 of New Jersey's towns. I stole it, reordered it by county then town, and made it into a table. It's below the fold. Enjoy the comparisons. By the way, the main reason why property taxes are such a problem in the tri-state area is that they are a stupid residential tax. When property taxes were first levied owning land usually generated income, and the property tax was essentially an income tax. But few people live on land from which they generate income these days. Urbanization and the fundamental urge to own our own homes on a small plot of land (thanks, George Bailey!) have separated real property ownership from revenue. In fact, most residential property goes on the expense side of the ledger rather than the income side since a paid off house is a rare thing this day and age. As a result we are taxing people based on their expenses instead of their income. It's just a stupid residential tax. Read more |
