Federal mandate straps S.J.'s vocational schools Federal standards designed to improve education in public schools are hurting vocational and technical programs statewide, officials said. In Camden County, a consequence has been less money for teacher salaries and benefits. Camden County Technical Schools is requiring for the first time that schools sending students pay tuition, $2,500 per student. The tuition costs, intended to plug a $4.8 million budget shortfall, begin in September. The new costs have school officials furious. "It's going to impact big time and it's going to impact big time on all schools," said Lynda Lathrop, a spokeswoman for the Gloucester City School District. "There's only so much money and, unfortunately, we're getting less and less of it." Hagan Sr., of Gloucester City passed away on November 28, 2006 at the age of 71. Charles was born, raised and lived his entire life in Gloucester City. Joe Rafferty Officially Mt. Ephraim School Supt. By Linda Boker-Angelo NEWS Correspondent New superintendent Joseph Rafferty has officially started his tenure in the Mount Ephraim School District. Rafferty was appointed in July to replace outgoing Chief School Administrator Richard Serfling, who will be retiring in December. Housing Code Violations; City Official Says They Are Working On It A resident in the 400 block of Ridgeway Street , Gloucester City, says he has been complaining to City officials about having to look at a trash dump behind some homes in the 100 unit block of South Sussex Street for years. He said there are times when the property owners don't put their trash out for pickup for weeks at a time. He added, " when they do put it out they block my driveway so I can't move my car." The trash along with the other violations are located in the backyard (s) of several homes that border his property. TWO PEOPLE ROBBED IN GLOUCESTER CITY; AT GUNPOINT (Courier Post) GLOUCESTER CITY -Two people were robbed at gunpoint at an apartment here Friday, police said. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. when two men broke into a home at the Chatham Square complex on Route 130, said police. Larry Appel radioed York County Control, placing Ambulance 46-1 and 46-2 permanently out of service. With his eyes glistening, Appel turned the key and shut down the ambulance - signifying the end of Fire Co. No. 1. "It's a sad day for all the company members and it's a sad day for the community," Appel said. And as the 190-year old fire company ended its service in the borough, Penn Township ambulances began to roll in. Wednesday & Thursday weather forecast Phillyweather-The coastal low is going to move less slowly and as a result our timeline on the rain forecasts for the region have moved up some as well. Rain looks to be moving up from the south on Wednesday and may reach the Philadelphia area during the evening. It looks to be a rainy Thanksgiving because of more "rapid" movement of this low. The band of rain continues to progress north slowly. Its progression is somewhat impacted by very dry air at the surface as dewpoints are in the teens just north of Philadelphia. Sleet was mixing in with the rain within the last hour here in Collegeville with temperatures dropping now into the upper 30's. Services For Newborn Baby Will Be Private; Family Request Memorial Donations To Pediatric Care Unit Funeral services for Sean Edward Colvin, 25 days old, of Brooklawn will be held privately under the direction of the McCann Healey Funeral Home, 851 Monmouth Street, Gloucester City. Sean is the newborn baby that was tragically killed last weekend in Brooklawn. He died on Sunday, November 19, 2006, in Cooper University Hospital, Camden where he had been taken for treatment. The woman who attacked the baby, Gloria J. Carter, 34, has been charged with his murder. In fact as you can see by the photo (s), even if the car belongs to the City's Police Department, and it is parked illegally it will be ticketed! My question? Who pays the ticket? The taxpayers or the patrolman who parked the car in front of his home? I also wonder if she isn't taking her job much too seriously? We all know the fine is not going to get paid. So why waste the ink? At one time the signs for "No Parking" during certain hours mentioned the word "sweeper". Officials Release More Information About The Murder Of Newborn Baby (November 21, 2006) More information is being released by authorities about the death of the newborn baby in Brooklawn on Saturday, November 18. Yesterday Acting Camden County Prosecutor James P. Lynch reported that a judge set bail at $200,000, cash only, for the woman accused of killing the 3-week-old boy. Gloria J. Carter, 34, is charged with the murder of Sean Colvin, who was born on Oct. 25. Carter is accused of cutting open the baby’s abdomen with a sharp object and throwing the infant down a flight of stairs. The game marks the final home game for 20 Rutgers' seniors at Rutgers Stadium. The game marks Rutgers' seventh appearance on the ESPN family of networks in 2006 and the eighth of nine national television appearances this season. Body found in Gloucester City Tuesday, November 21, 2006 Gloucester City police have refused to released the name of the person whose body was found near Collings Road and Essex Street citing the fact the relatives of the individual have still not been notified. Monday the Courier Post reported a body had been found behind a storage bin on the site of Montgomery Chemical Co. Inc. in Gloucester City. Police determined the individual died from a drug overdose before being found Sunday morning at the Railroad Avenue and Essex Street site. Read more →

Three-week old Baby Has Died BROOKLAWN-The newborn baby boy who was stabbed on Saturday following a domestic dispute at a home in the 300 block of Chestnut Avenue has died. Brooklawn Police Chief Fran McKinney, left, can be seen leaving the home yesterday. The baby was pronounced dead Sunday morning at Cooper University Hospital in Camden at 4:47 a.m., Camden County Prosecutor's Office Capt. Richard Minardi said. Police believe the newborn had been slashed across the abdomen by Gloria Carter, 34, Saturday morning. The baby was still alive when EMT's arrived and was taken to Cooper Hospital in Camden where he underwent surgery. An autopsy revealed the baby also suffered a blunt head trauma, possibly from being thrown down stairs, they said. DOLORES SIMILA, WIFE OF FORMER CITY COUNCILMAN, DIES SUDDENLY Dolores Simila, (nee Devine) wife of former Gloucester City Councilman Jack Simila passed away suddenly on November 16, 2006 at the age of 71. Jack and Dolores were married for 50 years. The couple were on a cruise when she passed away. She is survived by five sons, Jack, Michael, Frank, Bill, Nick, and two daughters, Kathleen Tohanczyn, and Angela Moore. Grandmother of 18 and loving great-grandmother of 1. Sister of Edward Devine and Mary Jane Rabchuk. Dolores was a member of St. Mary’s Church, and an avid boater. Son of former Gloucester City Lettercarrier Courier Post-In a playoff game last week, Tony Thornton Jr. unleashed such a powerful tackle against DePaul Catholic that Bishop Eustace Prep School football coach Tim McAneney is convinced it changed the game. "He made a hit on the kickoff, which is the reason why we scored 20 straight points," McAneney said about the 27-26 win for the Crusaders. "No one wanted to catch the ball anymore -- he was taking people's heads off." Thornton Jr. might have gotten that from his father, Tony Thornton Sr., who was known as "The Punching Postman" during his highly successful professional boxing days. Weekend Weather Forecast This weekend's weather will be cool compared to what we have experienced, with temperatures in the 50's for both Saturday and Sunday. Nothing arctic by any stretch but it is around normal. The early parts of next week will be relatively cool as well as the main impulse of cool air moves down from Canada. A coastal low may develop on Tuesday night and Wednesday to our south and move north towards us. This coastal low, should it develop, may be a stubborn storm and hang around whereever it develops for a few days, leading to coastal beach erosion and flooding, as well as a period of gloomy weather around Wednesday-Friday of next week. The aftermath of the storms will be a cooldown in the region but it will be a gradual, slow step down each day.
