Unaware of City News Policy Not to request crime report

November 30, 2006 To: Gloucester City Police Chief William Crothers From: William E. Cleary aka ClearysNotebook Dear Chief Crothers: It has come to my attention that the Gloucester City News Publisher and Editor, Albert Countryman was not in the habit of requesting a weekly crime report from your department on what crimes had been committed in Gloucester City over the previous week. In addition, because of my conversations with Mr. Countryman I had perceived your office was refusing to release this information to the public. Mr. Countryman states in today’s Gloucester City News, (November 30, 2006) and I quote, “ I as publisher, have not actively sought the police report. Personally, I don’t feel it is right to embarrass someone because of a mistake they made.” If Mr. Countryman had mentioned to me that this was his policy, not to print crime reports, I would never have been critical of... less federal funds for Gloucester Schools

Federal mandate straps S.J.'s vocational schools Federal standards designed to improve education in public schools are hurting vocational and technical programs statewide, officials said. In Camden County, a consequence has been less money for teacher salaries and benefits. Camden County Technical Schools is requiring for the first time that schools sending students pay tuition, $2,500 per student. The tuition costs, intended to plug a $4.8 million budget shortfall, begin in September. The new costs have school officials furious. "It's going to impact big time and it's going to impact big time on all schools," said Lynda Lathrop, a spokeswoman for the Gloucester City School District. "There's only so much money and, unfortunately, we're getting less and less of it." In New Jersey, a freeze on state aid for schools over the past five years, with no increase in sight, exacerbates the pressure on vocational schools to do more with less,... Read more →

Nov. 26County by County Property Tax Chart

NEW JERSERY PROPERTY TAX CHART by: huntsu Sun Nov 26, 2006 at 12:44:05 PM EST The New York Times has a boring story that rehashes all the idiotic themes for why we have a property tax problem in the tri-state area, but as a public service they have pulled together the median home price, median property taxes and property taxes per $100,000 of home value for more than 450 of New Jersey's towns. I stole it, reordered it by county then town, and made it into a table. It's below the fold. Enjoy the comparisons. By the way, the main reason why property taxes are such a problem in the tri-state area is that they are a stupid residential tax. When property taxes were first levied owning land usually generated income, and the property tax was essentially an income tax. But few people live on land from which they generate... Read more →

The trash along with the other violations are located in the backyard (s) of several homes that border his property. Warm weather continues

Phillyweather.net-We will continue the trend of warmth in the Delaware Valley for the next 5 days. Sunshine and pleasant weather during the daytime hours will result in temperatures being above normal until Thursday. Rain and a pretty potent trough will end the party here in the middle parts of next week, resulting in a near twenty point temperature drop from Thursday to Friday. Putting it into perspective though, the average high temperature next Friday is 48 degrees so even though a twenty degree drop sounds drastic, it really is not that much colder than normal. Also, keep in mind that it will be December next week so we should be getting colder. Today, expect sunshine and perhaps some high cirrus wafting through from time to time with temperatures in the 55-61 range, warmest of course along I-95. Tonight, with low dewpoints and 15 hours of darkness, temperatures should drop a... Read more →

Pennsylvania Fire/EMS Company Ends 190 Years of Service ASHLEY ADAMS The Evening Sun (Hanover, Pennsylvania) At 7 a.m. this morning, Hanover Fire Co. No. 1 EMS Lt. Larry Appel radioed York County Control, placing Ambulance 46-1 and 46-2 permanently out of service. With his eyes glistening, Appel turned the key and shut down the ambulance - signifying the end of Fire Co. No. 1. And as the 190-year old fire company ended its service in the borough, Penn Township ambulances began to roll in. Weather

Wednesday & Thursday weather forecast Phillyweather-The coastal low is going to move less slowly and as a result our timeline on the rain forecasts for the region have moved up some as well. Rain looks to be moving up from the south on Wednesday and may reach the Philadelphia area during the evening. It looks to be a rainy Thanksgiving because of more "rapid" movement of this low. The band of rain continues to progress north slowly. Its progression is somewhat impacted by very dry air at the surface as dewpoints are in the teens just north of Philadelphia. Sleet was mixing in with the rain within the last hour here in Collegeville with temperatures dropping now into the upper 30's. I expect temperatures to stay between 36 and 40 overnight in the suburbs and barely at 40 in Philadelphia, with very little warming tomorrow with periods of rain continuing. Read more →

Gloucester City's Meter Maid Strikes Again!

photo by Bill Cleary OOPS! YOU CAUGHT ME-Gloucester City's "Meter Maid" plays no favorites when it comes to giving out parking tickets. In fact as you can see by the photo (s), even if the car belongs to the City's Police Department, and it is parked illegally it will be ticketed! My question? Who pays the ticket? The taxpayers or the patrolman who parked the car in front of his home? I also wonder if she isn't taking her job much too seriously? We all know the fine is not going to get paid. So why waste the ink? At one time the signs for "No Parking" during certain hours mentioned the word "sweeper". Now that wording has been removed from the sign so they (the city) can write you a ticket even when the sweeper is broken; and or is not running because of inclement weather. The photo was... Tony Thornton Jr. excels in academics and on the gridiron

Son of former Gloucester City Lettercarrier Courier Post-In a playoff game last week, Tony Thornton Jr. unleashed such a powerful tackle against DePaul Catholic that Bishop Eustace Prep School football coach Tim McAneney is convinced it changed the game.
