OBITUARY: Donald C. Drass, of Woodbury, Decorated World War II Hero

 

Drass, Donald C., age 86 years, Decorated World War II Hero and Friend of Woodbury died on Feb. 13, 2012 at his home after a courageous battle.

Legacy

Don was a character who inspired all who entered his life. Born in Hollidaysburg, PA. After High School Graduation, Don joined the United States Army serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star Medals in recognition of his valor in service to his country. Don was "Mr. Fix It" to everyone who had problems with their lawn mowers, vacuums, or fans. A member of Holy Angels Parish in Woodbury, Don was also a member of Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers, the Moose, and the Teamsters.

Dear brother of Edward Drass, Sr.; Beloved uncle of Susan (Joe) Conte (nee Drass), Audrey (Bob) Vargo (nee Drass), Natalie (Joe) Leemon (nee Drass), Barbara Drass Criswell, Anne Farley Musser, Wilbur (Diane) Farley, Edward Drass, Jr., Virginia Drass Crego, Theresa (Kevin) Burt (nee Drass) and James Drass; loving grand uncle to many loving grand nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Paul and William, his sister Jane Mittendorfer and nephews Fr. Damian Drass and William Patrick Drass.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Most Reverend Joseph W. Estabrook, D.D., a native of Albany, N.Y. and Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern half of the United States of the Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS), died on February 4, 2012 in Houston, Texas following a lengthy illness. He was 67 years old.

Mary L. Seher (nee Duffy), age 80 of Clarksboro, NJ died Saturday, February 4, 2012.

A long-time Clarksboro resident, she grew up in Gloucester City, where her late parents started the family business - Duffy's Candies.  Mary loved to read and she spent many hours doing jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles.  She also enjoyed doing crafts and spending time in her yard where she could watch the birds.

 

Wife of the late Louis Seher, Jr., she is survived by her children: Deborah Kille-Campbell, Cynthia (William) Messick, Jacquelyn Seher, Louis (Beth) Seher III, Michele (Rich) Phalines; 8 grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren.

Cardinal Anthony J. Bevilacqua, Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia, died on January 31, 2012 at the age of 88. Cardinal Bevilacqua died in his sleep at 9:15 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, where he had resided since his retirement. Cardinal Bevilacqua served as Archbishop of Philadelphia from February 11, 1988 to October 7, 2003. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on June 28, 1991.

“I was greatly saddened to learn of the death of my predecessor Cardinal Bevilacqua,” said Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. of Philadelphia. “I encourage all Catholics in the Archdiocese to join me in praying for the repose of his soul and that God will comfort his family as they mourn his loss. Cardinal Bevilacqua has been called home by God; a servant of the Lord who loved Jesus Christ and His people.”

As the leader of the Archdiocese for 15 years, Cardinal Bevilacqua initiated a renewal process called Catholic Faith and Life 2000 to bring non-practicing Catholics back to the Church. The renewal process culminated on October 22, 2000 with 40,000 Catholics participating in a candlelight procession on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.

SCUTT, George W. – "SCUTTY", of Westville, NJ, passed away on 02 February 2012. Age 94 years.

George was the patriarch of the Scutt Family. He was strong willed and extremely devoted. He loved his family and was proud of everyone in it. George was truly genuine and had a way of making those around him smile. He was blessed with creativity and the use of his hands. There was nothing he couldn't fabricate / fix. George was fond of the Jersey Shore and resided in Strathmere, NJ every summer with his wife and family. He spent much time fishing on his boat Four Paws and walking the beach. George was fond of animals and could usually be seen walking with his fox terrier.

Scutty will very much be missed by all who knew him, especially his family.

Born in Philadelphia, George was a lifelong resident of Westville, NJ. George attended Woodbury High School and Camden Vocational. George was an electrician for Mobil - Research and Development in Paulsboro for 40 years, retiring in 1980, and was always proud of being a Red Horseman.

George and his late wife Agnes R. Scutt (nee Miller) met when the two were teenagers, eventually married, and were happily married for 69 years, never leaving Westville. Son of the late George and Joanna Scutt; George is the beloved father of Joseph (and the late, MaryLou) Scutt and George C. Scutt (Jennifer Krug); loving grandfather of Christopher (Mary) Scutt, Carl (Laura) Scutt, Katherine (Brian) Carpenter, Becky Scutt, Rosemary Scutt, Benjamin Scutt, Theresa (Scott) Evelius, and Mary F. Scutt, Frederick (Diane) Honsell and Gwendolyn Honsell; loving great grandfather of Samantha Agnes Scutt, Carmella Grasso, Spencer, Samuel, and Sawyer Scutt, Matthew and Thomas Donovan, William and Benjamin Carpenter; dear brother of Nancy (Al) Hudson and the late, Bert (Walt) Harris and step brother of Joseph Yager.

Sunday, January 29, 2012, in Caldwell, NJ. She was 84 years of age. The daughter of the late James Patrick and Catherine Conner Hanley, she was born May 6, 1927, in Jersey City, NJ.

 

Sister Catherine James entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY on September 8, 1945, made her First Profession June 25, 1947, and Final Profession August 26, 1950. She earned her BA in English from Villanova University and her MA in English from Catholic University.

Bill was a 1970 graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School where he captained the 1970 Boys Basketball State Championship Team. He received a Masters of Science Degree from American University in 1976 where he was a standout Basketball player. Bill continued at American U for two more years as a graduate assistant basketball coach. He was a 33 year member of the Pipefitters and Plumbers UA  Local Union 322.  Most recently Bill was Site Manager for Williams Plant Services at Palisades Nuclear Facility in Michigan.

Paul Damiani Funeral Services to be Held Friday

 

Paul Damiani, 52, of Williamstown died suddenly on Sunday from injuries substained in a two-vehicle accident on the South Black Horse Pike after he allegedly ran a red light, police said.

 

Police said Damiani, driving a 2003 Ford Taurus, was attempting to make a U-turn at a jughandle near the intersection of the Black Horse Pike and South Main Street, when his car entered the intersection and collided with a 2001 Ford F-150 that was being driven northwest on the Pike.

My dad loved to take us to Cabana Water Ice, Duffy's [I return at least twice a year for their fresh irish potatoes] the offices of The Gloucester City News (when he was employed there), and stores like the RxD Pharmacy [I'll always remember Al Zeises for his kindness]  & McGroarty's News [which is where you'll find the best hoagies]. We'd go on walks down to the river where he'd tell us about Gloucester City's & Camden's amazing history.

Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football history who in November lost his job as Penn State’s football coach in the wake of the Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, died Sunday in Mount Nittany Medical Center.

"He died as he lived," the Paterno family said in a written statement, according to The Associated Press. "He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been.

"His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community."

Passed away on January 16, 2012 formerly of the Delair section of Pennsauken.

Beloved husband of the late Mildred (nee Schultz). Devoted father of the late Raymond. Loving grandfather of Ashley (Tony) and Brooke (Matt) and great grandfather of Corine, Mia and Matthew. Dear brother of Jane Eckhardt, Margaret Boker (Donald), William Hart and Bessie Dunn (Jeff). Also survived by special niece Betty Leyman and her family, special nephew Joseph Fanelle, Jr. as well as many other nieces and nephews.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Hart was employed as a plasterer for Local 5 for many years. He was also a dedicated parishioner of St. Veronica's Church and St. Cecilia's Church.

Legacy

Mary's love for her family and faith was the passion that drove her hard working and caring nature. She dedicated close to 25 years at Bob's Newsstand in Westville, before working at the Colonial Diner and later devoted 30 years to Underwood Memorial Hospital as an employee and a volunteer. Mary was a longtime parishioner of St. Maurice before its closing and was a charter member of the Altar and Rosary Society.

Beloved wife to the late Jake Reynolds and formerly to the late Freddie Chapman; Devoted mother of Mary V. Wentzell ("Jack"), Frederick J. Chapman (Mary), Eileen P. Cook (Robert) and Claire L.
