My name is Rick Bender, and some call me the man without a face.  Let me tell you a little about myself.  I was born in San Diego, California in April of 1962.  I now live in Kentucky.  At the age of 12 I started using Spit Tobacco, commonly known as Chewing Tobacco.  there were several things that influenced me in its use, probably the biggest was the game of baseball. 

 

 

At the age of 26 (March of 1989) I was diagnosed with cancer because of my use of Spit Tobacco.  In April of 1989 I underwent my first of 4 major surgeries to remove the cancer.  I lost 1/3 of my tongue, 1/2 of my jaw, 25% use of my right arm, as well as almost my life.  I am still fighting the affect of my tobacco use today.

Sister Catherine James Hanley, OP, of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Ossining, NY, died

Sunday, January 29, 2012, in Caldwell, NJ. She was 84 years of age. The daughter of the late James Patrick and Catherine Conner Hanley, she was born May 6, 1927, in Jersey City, NJ.

 

Sister Catherine James entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, NY on September 8, 1945, made her First Profession June 25, 1947, and Final Profession August 26, 1950. She earned her BA in English from Villanova University and her MA in English from Catholic University.

Lady Lions Upset Lady Rams, 32-26 | GCN

January 21 was one of the most eventful days in Gloucester City so far this year, as the Lady Lions basketball team took on the Lady Rams, who are one of South Jersey Top 10 teams.

But ratings do not matter when Gloucester City High School meets rival Gloucester Catholic.

On Thanksgiving, the Lions football team beat the Rams on that historic day for the second year in a row.

This Saturday began with the junior varsity Lady Lions taking on the Lady Rams, and it was a nail biter until the final minutes.

Sophomore Latasha Sparrow got fouled after hitting a two pointer. She drilled the free throw to seal the deal, 29-26, for the Lady Lions.

  The day continued with the varsity game.

  As fate would have it, the Gloucester High varsity Lady Lions beat the Lady Rams, 32-26. Just like last year, it came down to the final minute and final shots.

  Junior Kathleen Velez made the key foul shots to seal it for the Lions.

  “Regardless of how big the rivalry is with Catholic, our team proved that it was just another game. We came out on top and stuck together till the end.” Velez said.

  The Lady Lions led in all four quarters and came out victorious – improving their record to 10-2 and staying in first place in the Tri County Conference.

Before a packed house on Saturday evening, Gloucester Catholic’s boys’ basketball team held on to turn back cross-town rival Gloucester City, 39-31, in a Tri-County Conference contest.

Senior Robbie Alessandrine converted all six of his foul shots in a tight fourth quarter to finish with 12 points for the Rams.

Senior forward Ryan Schoppy pulled down eight rebounds and also added 12 points, including eight in the second half, to lead the Rams.

Gloucester Catholic, which now owns a 9-5 overall record, won their fourth straight game.

Defense was the key in the first half as the Rams raced to a 12-3 first quarter lead and did not allow the Lions (8-6) to score a basket.

  Gloucester Catholic held an 18-12 halftime advantage.

  Alessandrine proved clutch down the stretch by sinking four straight foul shots in the final 18 seconds to seal the triumph.

Graduating seniors have until April 20, 2012, to submit their applications and essays to qualify for one of two (2) scholarships offered by the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Foundation. THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s push to restrain local levies might be working according to a study of community taxes by The Star Ledger. The detailed investigation showed state homeowners paid an average of 2.4 percent more for property taxes in 2011, the smallest increase in nearly two decades. 

 

The Star-Ledger analysis of taxes in all 566 New Jersey towns shows the average property tax bill was $7,758 last year, an increase of just $182.

 

The last time property taxes rose by such a small rate was 1992, when they went up 1.9 percent, according to state figures.

 

The data was compiled from numbers released by the state Department of Community Affairs and county boards of taxations.

(cnbnews.net)GLOUCESTER CITY NJ- THE video contains 10 minutes of edited film taken from the first two quarters of the game held at Gloucester City High School on Thursday, November 24. Gloucester High's Ben Boyer carried the ball 42 times for 294 yards. He scored two TD's leading the Lions to a 34-14 win. Boyer finished the season with 1841 rushing yards. The Rams Elliott McCummings had two TD with runs of 6 and 80 yards.

The Lions ended the season with a record of 5-5 while the Rams record is 3-7.

THE Thanksgiving Day game between Gloucester Catholic and Gloucester High began in 1948, on a gridiron field located at the Charles Street Stadium. For a brief period the game was stopped but was renewed again in 1993. The win today by the Lions ties the series record at 18-18. Read more

Pawlowski scored on runs of 51 and 4 yards in the first quarter. Alex Felxon ran in from 5 yards in the second quarter, before Pawlowski added 56- and 45-yard scoring runs.

With a lineup riddled with freshmen and sophomores playing prominent roles, and just three seniors on the team, the Panthers put on an impressive showing as they rallied in the second half to post their first win, 24-13 over winless Gloucester Catholic in a West Jersey League Independence Division contest.

Insufficient sleep among high school students associated with a variety of health-risk behaviors

Almost 70 percent of high school students are not getting the recommended hours of sleep on school nights, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published online by Preventive Medicine. Insufficient sleep is associated with a variety of health-risk behaviors, including physical inactivity, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, fighting, and being sexually active.

"The only way to have a friend is to be one."                                  Me and my girls   Dear Parents: What makes a good friend?  This is something I've been discussing a lot lately with my 12-year-old twin daughters, Taylor and Kendall, as I help them navigate the ever-changing landscape of teen friendships. (Download our Healthy Friendships Tipsheet-PDF) Since starting middle school, my girls seem to have a “best friend” of the week.  While I think it’s terrific to make new friends, I want to make sure they aren’t ditching their old pals. “How would you feel if you were her?” I asked when they suddenly stopped being friends with a girl they'd been close with for years. I cannot tell them who to be friends with, but I can teach them to be sensitive to the feelings of others.

Ray proudly served our Country in the U.S. Army. He retired after 40 years as a Supervisor of Operations for Tidewater Grain Co. in Philadelphia. He worked 12 years as an Orthopaedic Technician for DeLong-Born Orthopaedic Associates in Haddonfield. Ray was one of the founding parishioners of St. Maurice R.C. Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was also involved in the Holy Name Society at the church. He was also a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Ocean City. Ray was a member of the Brooklawn American Legion Post # 72, Lamont Social Club in Philadelphia and Past President of the Belles of Saint Mary’s Drum and Bugle Corps in Gloucester City.

Dear Parent:

They say that "the only thing permanent in life is change," and that may well be true. But just because change is natural doesn’t make it any easier.

My 17-year-old daughter Lauren will soon begin her senior year of high school. My 19-year-old daughter Alexandra is heading back to Virginia to start her sophomore year of college. (You could say it's a bit stressful in our house at the moment.)

Parenting is all about weathering transitions. Each step along the way -- first tooth, first day of kindergarten, first time behind the wheel -- we celebrate our child's new milestone, but deep down, a part of us is heartbroken as a chapter of our child’s life comes to an end.

Some transitions can be particularly tough. Even life events that are typical and expected – like starting puberty or moving up a grade – can feel like a big deal to tweens and teens (and parents).  It's the newness, the anticipation and the fear of the unknown that causes anxiety and stress.

CDC: Athletes need to take special precautions in hot weather-cnbnews.net

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages coaches, athletes, and those exercising outside in hot weather to know the warning signs for heat-related illness and take action when needed. 

 

“Any athlete dying from heat is a tragedy that can be prevented,” said CDC’s Robin Ikeda, M.D., M.P.H., Deputy Director for Noncommunicable Diseases, Injury and Environmental Health.  “Coaches, parents, teachers, and athletes should educate themselves on how to recognize and prevent heat-related illness.”

 Gloucester Catholic High School (GCHS) will expand its programs to include a junior high for the coming academic year.

  The school will host an Information and Registration Night for prospective students, and their families, Tuesday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

  Administrators, faculty and current GCHS students will be there to discuss academics, athletics, extra-curricular activities, transportation and related concerns. Applications are available on the website, www.gchsrams.org.

ramscrosscountry: Phillies Inaugral 5k Run

Not many first time races could attract 3100 runners. Then again, not many races have the popularity and the backing of the Philadelphia Phillies behind them. This year’s inaugural Phillies 5k in March attracted 3100 entrants and the online registration closed in a reported 12 hours.  And this is before most of the online registrants knew that the race would include:

 Being led at the races start by the incomparable Philly Phanatic.

 Phillies Ball girls cheering on the runners at the finish line.

 A walk around the Citizens Park field after the race with a photo opp at home plate.

 Phillies Announcer Dan Baker reading out the race award winners along with signed Phillies items as prizes.

 Sub freezing temps at race time.

The less than ideal weather conditions did not seem to bother the sea of red runners, most wearing Phillies shirts and jerseys of their favorite players, from enjoying running the inaugural Phillies 5k in the least.

The first male finisher was 25-year-old Mike Zeberkiewicz of Philadelphia who covered the South Philadelphia course, which circled the stadium complex in 17:00. The first female finisher was 33-year-old Lynn Knothe of Wilmington Delaware in 19:31.
