(FLEMINGTON, N.J.)(June 5, 2018)—Gloucester Catholic won the South Jersey,
Non-Public B championship today defeating Immaculata 5-1. The game was played at the Diamond Nation baseball complex in Flemington on an astro turf field which was slippery at times for baserunners on both teams.
The Rams's pitching ace Andrew Vail was strong on the mound for 4.5 innings striking out 11 and reliever Ian Murphy finished the game not allowing a hit and fanning three to earn the save.
Gloucester Catholic's Evan Giordano lead off the first with a solo homer.
Gloucester Catholic (19-8) will look to defend its state title on Saturday or Sunday against North champion DePaul, which defeated Gill St. Bernard's. The NJSIAA is scheduled to release official game times Wednesday morning.
The Rams defeated Newark Academy in last year’s state final.
Gloucester Catholic coach Adam Tussey praised Vail and Murphy on their performance. “Andrew has been doing it all year and has pitched in all of our big games,” said Tussey. “Having Murphy behind him, that’s a pretty big guy to have come in and close out a game. He worked his butt off to be healthy enough to pitch in a game like this. When you have two guys like that, all you have to do is call the pitches.”
