GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (March 27, 2018)(CNBNewsnet)--Every once in a while we hear a rumor
or two floating around the City of Gloucester City that seems to grow more and more each day. Sometimes the tales are true and on other occasions they are unfounded. Fortunately for the public and CNBNews whenever those rumors involve police matters we have Police Lt. Steve Burkhardt to reach out to for an explanation. Over the years he has always been upfront with us and very cooperative.
Most recently we heard the following:
1.)The daughter or son of Gloucester City Mayor William James recently was hired for the city police force?
2.)A firemen was badly beaten at the firehouse by another fireman allegedly. The injured fireman walked in the Irish parade wearing a sling.
3.)A girl was beaten up at Jalapeños parking lot. One of the police officers who responded found the injured girl bleeding and says something along the lines, "That's what you get for being drunk. She calls a cop she is friendly with, and he tells the other cop to back off the case. The officer takes the injured woman to the hospital and afterwards locates the perps and arrest them at their home. This happened around March 10, I think.
4.)The City recently fired a female cop. Nobody seems to know why.
Lt. Burkhardt responded to our inquiry via an email.
1.)Mayor James’ daughter, Johanna James, is one of two new officers hired in February. William DeFoney was also hired and they are both in their fourth week of training at the Gloucester County Police Academy.
2.)We have an active investigation in conjunction with the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office regarding an assault that took place at GCFD Headquarters. I cannot comment further on the investigation at this time.
3.) I reviewed all of the body camera video from the officers at the scene and none of this is true. The victim was assaulted by two other females, who were not on location when the officers arrived. The victim was standing outside the bar when they arrived and declined medical attention when it was offered. During the investigation, Detectives obtained statements from those involved and the two females were criminally charged with the assault. The females were not arrested at their homes.
4.) It is personnel matter. I cannot comment on personnel matters.
