GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (January 13, 2018)--You may have noticed your dog limping after a long walk in freezing temperature. It may be because she has walked on salt.
Some folks still rely on salt to melt icy sidewalks. This salt can do lots of damage to a dog's paws.
Consider purchasing 'booties' for Fido; some dogs will tolerate them and they offer great protection to the pads of her feet. Purchase only ice-melting products that are pet-friendly. Or, buy kitty litter!
The properties in kitty litter (any kind) do not actually melt the ice, but it does provide traction on icy pathways. Suggest that your neighbors do the same. If they are not receptive, put a bit into a baggie or cup and offer it to them! They may be happy to switch when they see its effectiveness and economy!
If your dog is limping, wipe his paws with a warm washcloth. Inspect them for any breaks in the skin and apply healing ointment on them so they don't worsen.
Remember, your best buddy depends on you for care and protection. Don't let him down!
Wado udohiyu, (thank you very much in the Cherokee language)
