Lower Township – At approximately 13:53 p.m. on January 21st, 2018, the Lower Township Police Department, along with West Cape May, Cape May Point, and Cape May Fire Departments responded to Davies Lake located in the Higbees Wildlife Management Area of the Township, for a report of a dog that had fallen through the ice.
Upon the officer’s arrival, they quickly made their way to the lake. The officers observed a yellow retriever that had appeared to have fallen through the ice approximately 30 feet from the bank of the lake. The dog was unable to get out of the water and was struggling to stay afloat. The owner of the dog was on scene.
Patrolman Jordan Saini made his way on to the ice and out to the dog. When he attempted to pull the dog onto the ice, the ice gave way beneath them. Patrolman Saini and the dog fell into the frigid lake. Patrolman Saini was able to swim over to the ice shelf with the dog and get out of the water. He then pulled the dog out of the water and onto the ice. Patrolman Saini and the dog were able to walk on the ice and back on to the bank of the lake, unharmed.
Patrolman Saini was assisted by Patrolman William Kocis and Patrolman Jason Felsing.
