Sometimes, life cheats us; we lose our families, our jobs, our homes. Our children forsake us, we get old, loved ones die. And sometimes, we are forced to give up more than just inanimate objects.
Sometimes, we must give up a beloved pet.
If you are forced to give up a pet there are several things you can do to give Fido or Tabby a second chance. First, make sure the pet is up to date on shots and is spayed or neutered. Some shelters will not take an un-vetted animal. Next, give the pet a bath and apply flea medication if needed. Last, work on the pet's behavior to assure he or she is ready for a new family.
When you have done all of these things, research rescue groups. If you are unable to use a computer, ask a friend to help you. The Internet is the easiest and fastest way to find a rescue group.
If you cannot find a rescue group that will take your pet, call several shelters and be prepared to be put on a waiting list. It may take up to a month for your pet to be accepted into a shelter.
Before you give your pet up, please consider whether you truly need to do so. With some financial help and emotional support you may not have to traumatize the animal by giving him away.
