The Lions got on the score board first,  Austin Dobleman 60 yard pass to Stefano Okoro.  The Raiders came right back on a shovel pass from Zack Funk to De'Shaun Burgess, to take the lead. At the end of the half the score was 10-6 Paulsboro.

Funk had four touchdowns, including two rushing scores in the second half, to lead Paulsboro to a 38-20 victory over Gloucester City in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 1 playoffs yesterday in Gloucester City.

Boyer had two touchdowns, highlighted by a 72-yard reception from Dobleman in the fourth quarter, for Gloucester City.

GLASSBORO, NJ  – The Rowan University men’s swim team won 145-108 over Swarthmore College on Saturday in a nonconference meet.

The Profs have a 5-3 record while the Garnet is 3-1 overall.  Rowan came in first in the 200 medley relay (1:41.93) with Larry Dow (jr. Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams), Tyler Coe (fr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Twp.), Tim Dimond (sr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and Ben Cain (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit).  Coe, Pat Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Patrick Myers (fr. Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) and Joe Licwinko (so. Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) made up the winning (3:19.35) 400 freestyle relay.

Elaine Schmottlach has been a ballot clerk in the small southeastern New Hampshire town of Nottingham – population, 4,785 – for the last 25 years. Yet when it came time for her to vote on Nov. 6, she had to show valid photo identification as required under a new state law.

Schmottlach refused and submitted achallenged voter affidavit instead.

RESULTS OF 2012 ELK HUNT ANNOUNCED

 

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Game Commission officials today announced that 52 elk were harvested by the 65 hunters awarded elk licenses for the recently concluded 2012 elk hunt, which was held Nov. 5-10.  Of that total, 18 were antlered and 34 were antlerless. 

The heaviest antlered elk was taken by Richard Tratthen, Jr., of Scott Township, Lackawanna County. He took a 840-pound (estimated live weight), 8x8 on Nov. 7, in Jay Township, Elk County.

Thirty of America’s 50 largest cities are now covered by laws that prohibit smoking in all indoor areas of private workplaces, restaurants, and bars, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.   By late 2000, only one of the 50 largest U.S. cities—San Jose, Calif.—was covered by such a law.  As of Oct. 5, 2012, 16 of the 50 largest cities were covered by local comprehensive smoke-free laws, and 14 more were covered by state comprehensive smoke-free laws.

On 10/2/12 officers were dispatched to the area of Timber Blvd and New Jersey Rd for suspicious persons in the area.  Officers located Kelvin Jeffery Williams, 23, of Bellmawr and Jermeal Curtis Walker, 25, of Brooklawn in the area.  The two were both found to have active warrants for their arrest.  Jermeal was charged with Obstruction of Justice after he gave Officer’s a false name and was later found to be in possession of marijuana.  Both were brought to Police Headquarters, processed, and released pending court date.

Here are a few simple rules to follow so that dining is a pleasure for everyone:

1.  Dogs should not be allowed near the table. Keep them separated or outside for the main meal.

2.  Make sure to walk your dog before guests arrive; a tired dog is a better-behaved 'greeter'.

3. Do not allow your dog to jump on guests. If you feel he will be tempted, put him on a leash so that you can better control his behavior.

4. If you think your dog will be overly stressed or anxious, think about kenneling him for the day.

TRENTON – Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa announced that a Gloucester County man was sentenced to state prison today for possessing assault rifles and illegal ammunition magazines which were seized when the New Jersey State Police discovered a huge cache of weapons at his home in 2009.

The Killings Continue in Camden City /cnbnews

(cnbnews.net)Camden City set a new murder record on Friday. Charles Nicholson, 44, of Camden, was shot multiple times as he sat in his car at the Crescent Gardens apartment complex on Independence Road in the Fairview section of the City. The shooting , which occurred around 11:30 a.m., was the 59th homicide this year surpassing 1995 when there were 58 murders.

By the time police arrived at the scene, Nicholson was already dead.

Police were reportedly looking for a short, black man in a brown hooded sweatshirt in connection with the shooting.

Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to contact Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Investigator Pete Longo at 856-580-5854 or Camden Police Detective Bob Chew at 856-655-4947.

Paulsboro football uses offense, defense to hold off Gloucester in Group I action

 

The Red Raiders also did a solid job on the defensive side of the ball. After Stefano Okoro took a 60-yard pass from Austin Dobleman to the house to open the scoring, Paulsboro’s defense kept the Lions in check, for the most part.

Gloucester workhorse Ben Boyer carried 29 times — 21 in the first half — for 125 yards for an average of 4.3 yards per carry, down from his 6.8 for the regular season. He added a 1-yard touchdown run and a late 72-yard receiving score.

“Coach (Wayne) Farrow is a good defensive coach,” Burgess said. “I can honestly say if anything goes wrong on defense, it’s our fault. He’s a really good coach. He’s good to the point that if we see a certain formation, we know exactly what we need to do. We just do our best to contain them.”

“We weren’t able to run the ball with the consistency we needed to,” added Lions head coach Leon Harris, whose team is 7-2 heading into next week’s Thanksgiving game with Gloucester Catholic. “That coupled with the fact that they did a really good job with their offense, it was hard for us to get the ball back.

“You know what you’re going to get from Ben every game, a great effort. He gave a great effort tonight, but we didn’t give him a lot of clean looks and Paulsboro did a good job of keeping (Boyer in check).

The Raiders move on to the semifinals, where they’ll face the winner of today’s game between top-seeded Penns Grove and No. 8 Audubon. Head coach Glenn Howard said regardless of who his team plays, the Raiders are going to play their game and simply see what happens.

President Obama's election victory ensured his Affordable Care Act would remain the centerpiece of his first term in power - but that has left some business owners baulking at the extra cost Obamcare will bring.

Florida based restaurant boss John Metz, who runs approximately 40 Denny's and owns the Hurricane Grill & Wings franchise has decided to offset that by adding a five percent surcharge to customers' bills and will reduce his employees' hours.

With Obamacare due to be fully implemented in January 2014, Metz has justified his move by claiming it is 'the only alternative. I've got to pass on the cost to the customer.'

The Rowan University men’s basketball team enters the 2012-13 season with a solid group of returning players.  The Profs have back their top seven scorers from a team that posted a 12-14 overall record and a 5-8 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).  Rowan advanced to the NJAC Championship Tournament.

 

“It is an advantage returning a lot of players,” said head coach Joe Cassidy.  “It is better than having new players, but we still need to work to get better.  The experience does not necessarily translate to wins but it should help us in close games.”

This year, the Rowan University women’s basketball team will be on the court without two New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Conference selections and its three leading scorers. The Profs were 10-16 overall with a 4-9 conference mark last season.  

“I think other players that are returning and some newcomers are going to have to step into those roles,” said head coach Gabby Lisella. “I mean that’s the nature of the beast. Each season different people step up and do new things.”

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men’s basketball team will open its regular season schedule on Tuesday, November 20 when they visit William Paterson University for an 8 p.m. tip-off.

The Lions will square off against the Pioneers in the first of 18 New Jersey Athletic Conference games this season. The past few years the NJAC has fielded both a North and South Division with teams playing each institution in their own division twice and crossing over to the teams in the other once. This season, the conference has 10 teams in one division with each team playing everybody twice. The top six teams in the standings will qualify for the post-season conference tournament.

PITMAN, NJ – Thirteen Rowan University football players received New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Conference honors.  Linebacker Darren Dungee was chosen the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

 

The All-Conference first team selections included tight end Chris Garcia (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), offensive lineman Rob Barrett (sr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) and defensive tackle Steve Williams (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.).  Quarterback Louie Bianchini (sr. West Long Branch, NJ/Red Bank Catholic), wide receiver Ed Eisenhart (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.), offensive lineman Zak Taylor (sr. US budget deficit jumps 22% in October

 The US federal government's deficit rose sharply in October, casting a cloud over the start of the fiscal year as President Barack Obama and Congress tackle the coming "fiscal cliff" and ballooning debt.
