SCRANTON, PA (01/20/2012)(readMedia)-- The University of Scranton has announced it's Dean's List, which recognizes students for academic excellence during the 2011 fall semester. A student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum number of credit hours to make the Dean's List. The list includes students from the Jesuit university's College of Arts and Sciences, the Kania School of Management, the Panuska College of Professional Studies and the College of Graduate and Continuing Education. More than 1,420 students were named to fall 2011 semester Dean's List, including the following area residents.

Through evaluation of each position more questions surfaced then answers. Did the era in which an individual play enhance his status? Salem County Man Indicted on First-Degree Charges of Attempted Murder and Kidnapping

TRENTON – Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa and Criminal Justice Director Stephen J. Taylor announced today that a Salem City man was indicted on first-degree charges of attempted murder and kidnapping in connection with an incident last year in which he allegedly held his girlfriend and her three children hostage and fired on responding law enforcement officers, wounding a county investigator and a police dog.

According to Director Taylor, Lavar Rodgers, 25, of Salem City, was named in a 29-count state grand jury indictment returned on Tuesday, Jan. 10, charging him with multiple counts of kidnapping (1st degree), attempted murder (1st degree), aggravated assault (2nd, 3rd and 4th degree), and weapons offenses (2nd degree). Rodgers is also charged with purposefully injuring a police dog, a fourth-degree offense.

 On a cold week-night, my companion and I embarked on our hunt for the perfect evening meal. Once again, our choice was Lillian's Cafe (34 W Merchant St, Audubon 08106, 856-547-1902), a charming BYOB in the heart of Audubon's shopping district. We arrived at 6:30 PM and, after standing about uncertainly, a customer seated at a nearby table instructed us to "sit anywhere". Our waitress arrived within seconds and apologized for the inconvenience. We later discovered she was the only wait-person working that evening.

The court’s opinion, written by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, accepts without reservation all of the arguments we made in support of his right to choose a federal court to assert his claims.

GCPD Crime Report: Drug Bust, 8 Cars Burglarized, Officer Bitten | cnbnews.net

On 01/18 at 2000 hours a search warrant was executed at 239 Third Street after an

investigation into the distribution of narcotics from the residence.  The target of the investigation, Georgina Eleuteri (46) was arrested at the location.  Officers seized several hundred pain medication pills and cash from a safe in the residence.  Eleuteri was charged with multiple counts of Possession of CDS and Possession with the Intent to Distribute.  She was released after posting bail.

 

 

On 01/13 several residents in the Riverview Heights neighborhood reported burglaries to their vehicles.  Seven vehicles in the neighborhood were burglarized.  Residents reported money, GPS units and paperwork stolen from the vehicles.

A member of the Hopelawn Volunteer Fire Department died after suffering a heart attack while battling a fatal blaze.

Firefighter Bruce Turcotte, 58, was transported to JF Medical Center in Edison where he died, according toThe Star-Ledger.

Crews responded to 33 Jefferson Street in the Menlo Park Terrace section of the Woodbridge Township.

"Bruce was an outstanding fire fighter and public servant," Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac said. "He loved the fire company. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

The resident who died in the fire was found in the basement of the wood-framed home.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Northwest Detectives Seek Assistance in Identifying Suspects Depicted in Surveillance Video

On January 17, 2012, at 6:12pm, while walking northbound on the 5000 block of North 5th Street, the 64-year-old complainant was approached from behind by six unknown males. These males assaulted the complainant causing serious injuries to the head, face, and hand. The suspects fled southbound on 5th Street from the scene.

Suspect description:
Six unknown Black and Hispanic males, 16-18 years-of-age, (1) male wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans

"We are experiencing overnight, residential burglaries.  There have been cases where the suspect(s) have gained entry into the home while the residents are asleep.  Other attempts have been made, but unsuccessfully.   The crimes have happened on the 900 block of Monmouth Street and the Highland Park section of the city, specifically on Highland Blvd and Rosalind Ave.  There have also been numerous vehicle burglaries during the past week and we urge residents to keep their vehicles locked and remove all valuables such as GPS units and money.   We ask residents to report anyone suspicious in their neighborhoods to police. Back in October of 2011, the Obama administration had to pull the plug on the CLASS act — the health care law's provision to provide for long-term insurance for assisted living. The CLASS Act had collapsed under its own weight and sheer unworkability. Eric A. Homan (DOB  7/22/90) of 17 Millstone Court, Sicklerville NJ was sentenced Tuesday (1/18) to five years in New Jersey state prison for admittedly taking $24 at gunpoint from one of two men during an in-car robbery in Washington Township, Gloucester County NJ on Nov. 10, 2009.

Erie County man arrested following search of suspected meth lab

HARRISBURG - Agents from the Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation and officers from the Girard Police Department have arrested an Erie County man following the search of a suspected methamphetamine lab in Albion, Erie County.

Attorney General Linda Kelly identified the defendant as Jeffrey Wayne Chuzie, age 31, of 24 North St., Albion.

Kelly said that Chuzie was arrested following the execution of a search warrant at his home on January 12, 2012, by agents from the Attorney General's Office, members of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Drug Task Force and clandestine laboratory response teams from the Attorney General's Office and Pennsylvania State Police.

South Detectives Seek Help in Identifying Suspect Depicted in Surveillance Video

 

On January 12, 2012, at 6:55pm, the complainant parked on the second floor of the parking garage located at 1100 S Broad Street. As the complainant exited the vehicle she was approached by an unknown male who pushed the complainant back into the vehicle and demanded money. The suspect took $100 USC from the complainant. The suspect then fled on foot from the parking garage.

On December 11, 2011, at 10:55pm, the complainant parked inside the parking garage located at 1100 S Broad Street. The complainant was approached from behind by an unknown male armed with a knife demanding money. The complainant handed the offender a laptop and $60 USC. The suspect fled on foot down the stairwell and exited the building on 15th street.

New Law Allow School Elections to be held in November

 

Trenton, NJ –  Acting on his commitment to work in a bipartisan manner to get results for the people of New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie today signed into law legislation allowing for local school board and budget elections to be moved from April to November. The bill, passed with bipartisan support in the legislature, puts into law a tool kit proposal originally introduced by Governor Christie in May 2010.

Pa. Firefighter Killed In Wreck On Way To House Fire | FIREHOUSE.COM NEWS

 

A 19-year-old firefighter with the United Hook and Ladder Company was killed responding to a house fire Wednesday evening.

 

A 19-year-old firefighter with the United Hook and Ladder Company No. 33 in Adams County, Pa., was killed responding to a house fire Jan. 18, according to television station Fox 43 WPMT. 

According to the news report, the young firefighter, crashed at about 6:30 p.m. in Berwick Township near the Lincoln Speedway. The victim was reportedly in a privately owned vehicle and may have been ejected in the violent crash en route to the scene in Hamilton Township.

The television station reports authorities are withholding the name of the victim pending notification of the next of kin.

Indoor Pot Lab Discovered in Erie County

 

HARRISBURG - Agents from the Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation and police from the City of Corry have arrested an Erie County man following the discovery of a suspected indoor marijuana growing lab and hallucinogenic mushroom operation inside his trailer home.

Passed away on January 16, 2012 formerly of the Delair section of Pennsauken.

Beloved husband of the late Mildred (nee Schultz). Devoted father of the late Raymond. Loving grandfather of Ashley (Tony) and Brooke (Matt) and great grandfather of Corine, Mia and Matthew. Dear brother of Jane Eckhardt, Margaret Boker (Donald), William Hart and Bessie Dunn (Jeff). Also survived by special niece Betty Leyman and her family, special nephew Joseph Fanelle, Jr. as well as many other nieces and nephews.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Hart was employed as a plasterer for Local 5 for many years. He was also a dedicated parishioner of St. Veronica's Church and St. Cecilia's Church.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Visitation and Funeral on Thursday from 7-9 PM and Friday from 8:30-9:30 AM at the falco/CARUSO and leonard Pennsauken Funeral Home, 6600 N. Browning Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 AM at the Parish of Mary Queen of All Saints, Church of St. Cecilia, 4801 Camden Ave in Pennsauken. Interment will follow at Bethel Memorial Park in Pennsauken.

Linda A. Lewis, Brooklawn United Methodist Church Nursery School Teacher for 34 Years

On January 14, 2012 (nee Walton) of Brooklawn, NJ, age 64, went to be in Paradise with her beloved son Bryan. She is the beloved wife and life for 44 years of Robert, devoted mother of Jennifer and Jason (Chrissy), cherished Mom-Mom of Abigail and Gavin, loving daughter of Joseph and Helen Walton, dear sister of Deborah Weston (Tom) and sister-in-law of Dianna Williams (Wayne) and Theresa Wills (Joe). Linda is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Kevin (Nicole), Steven (Erin), Lauren, Caitlin, Joseph, Lauren, Sara and Lilly, her cousins, Jim Carney (Carol), Jimmy and Erin, her friends, Karen Ryan (Rich), Janis Conley (Jim) and Maryann Langley, also special friend of Bob's cousins, Dave and Barb, Diane and Jim, Davene, Eddie and Elsie, Elinore, Cookie and Mike. AGE: 91 • Gloucester City

On January 16, 2012, Bernard J. Farley passed away at home. A graduate of Audubon High School, Bernard served with the Army Air Force in the Pacific during WWII. He retired from Campbell's Soup in Camden with over 40 years of employment.

Bernard was the beloved husband of the late, Louise A. (nee Wetmore). He is lovingly survived by his 10 children: Louise (Bill) Donley, Bernard (Darleen) Farley, Mary (Lloyd) Watkins, Margaret (George) Christman, Thomas (Susan) Farley, Catherine Farley, Elizabeth (Tim) Jackson, Theresa (Robert) Force, Christina Harrity and Walter (Donna) Farley; 25 grandchildren especially Joseph Farley; numerous great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joe, Jim and John Farley as well as his sister, Mary.

Irvington Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison in Conspiracy to Ship 500 Pounds of Marijuana

TRENTON – Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa and Criminal Justice Director Stephen J. Taylor announced that an Irvington man was sentenced to state prison today for his role in a drug ring that shipped more than 500 pounds of marijuana from Arizona to New Jersey using UPS and FedEx. Four other members of the drug ring were previously sentenced to prison.

According to Director Taylor, Roy Winston Harte, 52, of Irvington, was sentenced to 12 years in state prison, including six years of parole ineligibility, by Superior Court Judge Ronald D. Wigler in Essex County. Harte was convicted at trial on Oct. 7 of three counts of first-degree distribution of marijuana, two counts of first-degree possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, one count of second-degree conspiracy, and one count of third-degree distribution of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school.
