Unless you have been under a self-imposed media blackout in the past couple of weeks, you are familiar with the death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida.  This shooting of 16-year-old Martin — who was killed by 28-year-old old neighborhood watch-captain George Zimmerman — raises serious questions relating to race, police procedure, and the efficacy of Florida’s “stand your ground” legislation.  The shooting was tragic.  The conduct of Zimmerman and the police handling of the investigation leave many unanswered questions.  But this death of a young man also underscores a point that law enforcement groups in Indiana were attempting to make several weeks ago before the state legislature.

Catholic Student Group Leaving Vanderbilt University over Controversial School Policy

NASHVILLE, TENN., March 29 (CNA) .- A Catholic student group says it will leave the Vanderbilt University campus at the end of the year over  a controversial school policy which bars the group from requiring its leaders to be Catholic.

“The discriminatory non-discrimination policy at Vanderbilt University has forced our hand,” Vanderbilt Catholic chaplain Father John Sims Baker said in a March 26 statement.

A few days before the piece came out, I made the case that the 2012 election has two tracks: Obama vs. Mitt Romney (assuming he'll be the GOP nominee) and Obama vs. Obama. ROWAN’S RANERO WINS 400TH CAREER GAME

GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University head baseball coach Juan Ranero earned his 400^th career victory on March 28 against Neumann University, 8-7.

 

In 16 seasons, Ranero has a won-loss record of 400-271-5.  At Rowan, he has a 291-168-4 mark in 12 years. This is Ranero’s second stint at the University.  He coached the Profs from 1994-98 (112-74-1) and returned in 2006 (179-94-3).  Ranero posted a 109-103-1 mark at Barry University from 2002-2005.  He has guided Rowan to seven appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.  The Profs played in the national tournament in 2011, 2010, 2008, 2006, 1998, 1997 and 1996.

March 29, 2012- Jason Kerrigan  (DOB 6/17/76), a former resident of Monroe Township NJ, pleaded guilty today to second-degree aggravated assault, admitting that he yanked and banged his three-month-old daughter in her crib, which caused 10 different bone fractures in November 2011.

The Rowan University men’s outdoor track and field team returns all of its national qualifiers from last year. Coach Bill Fritz is looking for them and more athletes to travel to Claremont, CA for the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships in May.  Last season, the men tied for 12^th in the team scoring among 82 schools at the national championships.  The Profs took second at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships and they were tied for eighth at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.

FBI — Newark Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Carjacking, Weapons Possession

NEWARK—A Newark man was sentenced today to 10 years in prison for his role in a gunpoint carjacking, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Amonra Jackson, 30, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares to two counts of an indictment charging him with one count of theft of a motor vehicle by force, violence, and intimidation and with one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Judge Linares imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court.

Woodbury man sentenced in robberies

March 30, 2012

 

Jason Moore  (DOB 11/5/90)  of South Evergreen Ave., Woodbury was sentenced today  (3/31)  to five years in New Jersey state prison for his admitted role in the armed robberies of attendants at two service stations and a taxi driver in Woodbury between Nov. 15 and Nov. 23, 2010.

 

Moore pleaded guilty to the second-degree charges of conspiracy to commit robbery on Jan. 30, 2012

 

In sentencing Moore to three concurrent five-year terms, Superior court Judge M. Christine Allen-Jackson said he must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole and will be subject to three years of parole supervision after his release. He will be credited for time in jail since his arrest.

 

Moore admitted participating in the robbery at gunpoint of employees of a Citgo station in Woodbury Heights on Nov. 15, 2010 and a  Lukoil station in Woodbury on Nov. 20, 2010 and a taxi driver on East Centre St. on Nov. 23, 2011.  He was arrested Nov. 30, 2010 following questioning on the robberies.  A codefendant in the taxi driver holdup,  Jamal Hayes  (DOB 3/21/92), of 502 Broadway, Westville, pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and was sentenced  to five years in state prison on Nov. 10, 2011.

Randy S. James Jr.  (DOB  10/16/89), formerly of Blackwood NJ, pleaded guilty today to first-degree robbery, admitting that he took cash from a taxi cab driver in Deptford Township NJ and slit the driver’s throat with a knife on June 10, 2010.

GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University honored 213 student-athletes at its annual Student-Athlete Day on Friday, March 30.  The presentation was held in Esbjornson Gymnasium.

 

Rowan recognized these individuals because they have achieved a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.  This year, 93 student-athletes accumulated a GPA of 3.4 or higher and 120 had a GPA between 3.0 and 3.39.

George Norcross aka King George has made SO MUCH money from corrupting the political system that he can fly around in a helicopter regularly; purchase a beachfront home in LBI; purchase a $10 million home in Palm Beach; BUY A NEWSPAPER like the Philadelphia Inquirer; and employ all kinds of people in other areas. 

Meanwhile, Camden is a mess; Police/Fire/EMS personnel are being thrown away WHILE millions continue to be wasted at the local & county level; our taxes are among the highest in the nation while our roads, school system & opportunity for meaningful employment get worse with each passing day; Wayne Bryant is still not talking yet King George is no stranger to federal investigations & headlines that make you wonder his actions all legal; people are AFRAID to speak up even though King George can admit to pay to play at the DRPA; a multitude of politicians pander to him for selfish reasons, in fact so many owe their political & income to George that there is an "unspoken word" to defend anyone who is part of the family or 'club'.

Newark Man Indicted for Allegedly Stealing $165,600 from Harrah Casino

TRENTON – Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa announced that a Newark man was indicted yesterday on charges that he stole $165,600 from Harrah’s Resort and Casino in Atlantic City by allegedly making copies of checks that were issued to him by the casino and fraudulently collecting payment on the copies as well as the original checks.

Terry Dilligard II, 35, of Newark, was charged yesterday in a 10-count state grand jury indictment with one count of second-degree theft by deception and nine counts of third-degree forgery. It is alleged that Dilligard used a color copier or computer scanner to print duplicates of nine checks totaling $165,600 that he received from Harrah’s when he redeemed casino chips.

State Comptroller Investigation Reveals Pattern of Mismanagement at DRPA

March 29, 2012-Ineffective oversight and weak policies led to a culture at the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) in which tollpayer dollars repeatedly were wasted and mismanaged, according to an extensive investigative report released today by the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC).

The OSC report found that the DRPA frequently granted itself such broad discretion and operated under such vague program guidelines that almost any conceivable action or expenditure could be deemed acceptable. In other areas of DRPA operations, the report found appropriate policies and procedures designed to safeguard against the waste of tollpayer funds were avoided or simply ignored.

Legacy

Rose was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. To her children, Rose was supportive, caring and proud of all that they accomplished throughout their lives. To her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Rose was the essence of what we all wish for in a grandmother and they cherish the memories that were made in the time that was shared. Rose was born and raised in Philadelphia to Italian immigrant parents and was one of seven children. She met and married a young man, Joseph J. Borda , who affectionately called her his "Lady in Blue", shortly after he returned home from serving in the Army during World War II. Together they shared 60 years of married life and raised three daughters that completed their family and that they loved very much. Rose and her family moved to New Jersey in 1954 and that was where she would remain for the rest of her life. Rose was a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Church for more than 50 years. Rose devoted her life to raising her family and tending to her home. There wasn't a day that went by that Rose wasn't preparing a fabulous family meal, Zeppoles for the annual St. Joseph's Feast Day or her famous Easter Frittata that her family looked forward to every year or working at her sewing machine on the latest dresses that she would be making for one of her girls. Rose enjoyed a wonderful life and all the pleasures that accompanied it including, listening to Classic Country Music, jigsaw puzzles and most of all, the time spent with her family in her home that was always a place where countless hours of fond memories were made and will now be cherished by her family. Rose's family would like to extend a special and sincere acknowledgement to Dr. George Schmid and his staff and Edith Crowley for the exceptional care extended to Rose during her extended illness over the past year.

Rose is the beloved wife for 60 years of the late Joseph J. Borda; loving mother of Amelia Bonczak and her husband Richard, Phyllis and Rosemarie Borda; cherished grandmother of Richard Bonczak & his wife Judi, Christina Bonczak and Lisa Coulter & her husband William; great grandmother of Richard III and Anthony Joseph Bonczak and sister in law of Carmella & Marie Borda. Rose is predeceased by her parents Pasquale & Philomena Borda, her brothers; Louis, James, Joseph, Salvatore, Frank and sister Theresa Romano.

FBI — Man Charged with Attempting to Carry an Explosive Device onto an Airplane

Joseph Picklo, 29, of Dallas, Pennsylvania, was charged today by criminal complaint with attempting to carry on an explosive device on a plane, following an incident at Philadelphia International Airport. Picklo was being screened for a United Airlines flight to San Francisco this morning when a plastic bottle filled with an explosive substance was found in his luggage.

Image Books, a division of Random House publishing, has announced the release of an original new eBook authored by Philadelphia's Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. A Heart on Fire: Catholic Witness and the Next America, will be available electronically on March 27, 2012. The eBook - an extended essay on the role of religious faith in American public life today -contrasts current pressures against religious liberty in the United States with the vigorous role this freedom played in founding and forming the nation.

Cherry Hill Fire Dept Responds to Wind Swept Fire to Rear of Super Market

March 26, 2012

Cherry Hill Firefighters were alerted to a reported rubbish fire to the rear of the Pathmark super market in the 900 block of Church Road. As a single crew of firefighters arrived, they encountered a wind swept fire involving about 40 to 50 feet of wooden fence and the brush around it. Also on fire were a half dozen wooden pallets leaning against the building.

Newswise — (CHICAGO) – Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and a multicenter team of investigators have found that carotid artery stenting (CAS) is safe and effective in patients age 70 and older.

American Legion Post 68 Commander Nicholas J. DiGrosso Succumbs

Nicholas J. DiGrosso, Sr,. 79, a thirty-nine year employee of the Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission. Nick, the only son of Michael and Helen DiGrosso and big brother to his three sisters; died Monday with his loving family by his side. Nick first came to the commission in 1958 after serving in the Army in Korea. Having lived most of his life in Pennsauken and Merchantville, Nick attended Camden Catholic High School and Camden County Vocational School. The water commission was not a stranger to Nick's family in light of the fact that his father, Michael, worked there thirty years as a plant operator.

Project 21 Founder Critical of New Black Panthers

Washington, D.C. - Legal commentator Horace Cooper, a founding member of the African-American leadership group Project 21, is criticizing the New Black Panthers' call for a ransom on George Zimmerman in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting.

"The efforts of the New Black Panthers go beyond legitimate discourse and are the legal equivalent of shouting fire in a crowded theatre," says Cooper. "In addition to their ongoing investigation into the Martin shooting, authorities in Florida and Washington should insure that hate groups like the Panthers stay within legal bounds."
