Press Release April 27
Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk, Bellmawr Police Chief William Walsh and Brooklawn Police Chief Francis McKinney reported a police-involved fatal shooting Thursday night, April 26.
Police responded to a report of several 9-1-1 hang up calls at the Bellmawr Manor Apartments on the 1100 block of Kings Highway in Bellmawr about 10:20 p.m.
Two Bellmawr officers and a Brooklawn officer responded. At the scene they were informed that Michael Wood, 37, was apparently barricaded in a relative’s apartment where he had been staying.
Based on information received from the tenant of the apartment, officers entered the apartment and found Wood inside holding a knife.
During the encounter, a Brooklawn patrol officer with 15 years experience as a law enforcement officer fired two rounds from his service weapon, killing Wood.
An investigation is ongoing into the details of the incident.
Whenever a police officer’s use of a firearm when on duty results in death, the officer is placed on administrative leave and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office conducts an investigation into the incident.
Investigators will interview the officers present and other witnesses. Notification has been made to the state Attorney General’s Office.
