SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (January 24, 2012) – On January 22 at Seton Hall University, senior student-athlete Kaitlin McClymont (Corpus Christi, Texas) of the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team was named Stevens’ recipient for the National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) award. The event was sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
The event recognized 40 years of Title IX as well as 40 years of women in sports. Also, this is the 20th year for the awards ceremony.
NGWSD began in 1987 as a way to recognize the past and current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports. The organization was also created in remembrance of Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her work and success in sports after she passed away in 1986.
McClymont adds to her long list of achievements this year with the award. In 2011, the goalkeeper was named second-team All-Empire 8 – after an honorable mention nod in 2010, National Soccer Coaches Association of America second-team All-East Region and NSCAA/Adidas Women’s College Scholar All-East Region third-team. The Ducks were also recognized by the NSCAA for their outstanding performance in the class room.
On the field, McClymont helped lead Stevens to the regular and postseason championship in the Empire 8 and a berth to the NCAA Division III First Round after a 14-3-4 season. She finished the season with a .897 save percentage, which was good for ninth best in all of DIII. McClymont played in 16 games (11-2-3 record) this season and 1,423:47 minutes in goal for the Ducks, allowing just 11 goals for a 0.70 goals-against average. She stopped 96 shots on goal and posted four shutouts.
