An article in a daily newspaper said that residents in East Greenwich Township are projected to save $178.40 on residential property taxes in 2012 based on reevaluation.
Residents in Bellmawr, FY2010, paid an average of $5,082 in property taxes, sliced up into 22.3 percent for county taxes, 46.34 percent in school taxes, and 31.3 percent in local taxes.
On average, taxes increase $327 per year in 2009. In my opinion we are overtaxed. Property taxes are too high in Bellmawr. There is no reason why residents cannot receive a notice regarding some type of reduction in property taxes next fiscal year.
Local elected officials have said their have been tax reforms, specifically a 2 percent tax levy cap, pension and benefits reform, and shared inter-local agreements with other towns. With these reforms and savings, when can residents overburdened with high property taxes expect to see immediate savings in the form of tax relief?
We shall see if Mayor and Council provide the necessary leadership and announced savings that will be returned to residents. Tax relief is long overdue, and if no relief is provided it is a complete disservice to the residents of Bellmawr. Fundamental and meaningful reforms will only occur if residents hold our elected officials accountable.
