My name is Kelly Light-Erlink, and I am running for one of the three open seats on the Gloucester City School Board. Both of my parents grew up in this town, and I have fond memories of a childhood well spent in Gloucester City. After college and getting married, my husband, Paul, and I decided to move back to town and raise our daughter here. I have a large extended family here in town and want my daughter to experience all that is good in Gloucester City.
I remember a meeting I had with then superintendent, Dr. Stansky, when my daughter was starting preschool during which I asked, "What does Gloucester City School System have to offer my daughter? She will, after all, be spending more time here with your people than at home." She replied, "Well, she will do fine. Kids who get what they need at home will always do well." I will never forget that remark. Unfortunately, I was not in the position to run for the school board at that time as I was working a good distance from home. I have always subscribed to the saying "It takes a village to raise a child." I believe we can be a better village for Gloucester City's children.
During this current economic crisis that our state and country are being faced with, we, as taxpayers and parents, need to find creative ways to get the most out of the resources we have available to us. I may not have all the answers now; however, I feel my experience in running a business, as a taxpayer, and as a parent, has provided me with the necessary tools to ask the right questions and find the right answers. Those who know me well are aware of the fact that I will not stop asking such questions until I get the answers that are the best for all of our children.
