PHILADELPHIA DOO WOP FESTIVAL
In the mid 1950s, the Doo Wop music genre emerged from the streets of northeastern cities. Disadvantaged Philadelphia youth who could not afford instruments used their own instruments – their voices – to make music. Their playful yet passionate style of nonsense syllables evolved into an intricate class of group harmony that delivered some of the most popular hits of its time. On Saturday, August 8, 2009 from 1:00-7:00 p.m., Delaware River Waterfront Corporation proudly celebrates this historic, charming genre in its birthplace at the Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival. Visit the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, located on Columbus Boulevard at Chestnut Street for a rare opportunity to hear some of the greatest names in Doo Wop for FREE during this fabulous event produced by the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Education Center.
GOSPEL ON STAGE AND SCREEN
Inspiration, wonder and joy is what you will experience with the melodic sound of “Gospel on Stage and Screen!” Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at Penn’s Landing. Philadelphia native and gospel recording artist Tamika Patton will grace the stage followed by the traditional and contemporary chorale styling of the Sharon Baptist Church Mass Choir. Then at 8:00 p.m., Gospel on Stage and Screen will also feature a screening of the hit movie The Fighting Temptations. Co-Sponsored by WDAS FM and The CW PHILLY 57.
