The Board of Health Should Be More Active in Gloucester City

Dear Bill,

I am writing this letter concerning the Health Crisis facing our nation. Over the last few days we have heard on the news about the outbreak of the Swine Flu. Already over 44 cases have been reported in New York City and many states have declared emergencies. In addition there have also has been one death reported in the United States from the outbreak. Also this evening, according to CBS Eyewitness News two people in Vineland, Cumberland County NJ were tested for Swine Flu.

Around 4:00 p.m. this afternoon the World Health Organization elevated the threat level to 5 on a scale of 1-6. According to CNN at least 74 elementary, junior high and high schools have closed across the country due to confirmed or probable cases of swine flu, the Department of Education said Wednesday. In addition 30 schools have closed as a precautionary measure, Department of Education spokesman Massie Ritsch said. Additionally the Federal government is releasing medication to every state in the country.

Community Bird & Butterfly Garden Proposed

WESTVILLE NJ-Members of the Environmental Commission proposed the establishment of a community bird and butterfly garden in Thomas West Park.

During the April 8 meeting of Westville Borough Council, Virginia Horn explained that in addition to the garden, which will help the environment by allowing the bees to further pollinate other grounds, a rain garden in the same area would collect water.

“Good use of the run-off can help filter pollutants and allow about 30 percent more water to seep into the soil,” Horn said.

The commission also suggested the use of plant life around the lake area.

Business Owner Denied Request to Refurbish Property; Site Plan Missing

The Gloucester City Planning Board last week denied an application for a minor site plan waiver submitted by Tom Michaels, owner of Yankee Pest Control.

This was Michaels’ third time before the Board to seek approval for plans to refurbish his South Broadway property, which was formerly the Celtic Tavern.

Board Engineer Norman Rodgers, of Consulting Engineer Services, said that Michaels did not submit enough information regarding his plans, adding that a site plan would definitely need to be submitted.

Michaels had first appeared before the Board in 2003, requesting permission to park a mobile storage unit on the property and to make various improvements to the building.

A Successful Turkey Hunt

Bill Graves, a resident of the Pocono Mountains PA  shot a gobbler on Tuesday, April 28.

Graves writes, “Despite record book heat and a black fly explosion I shot this gobbler today at 7:00 am. Gobbler was with 9 hens so I really got lucky getting him in range. I used a mouth call,and a box call to pull him in. Bird was 19lbs with a 9 inch beard and 1inch and 1/8 spurs. Thanksgiving dinner!”

Graves is a former resident of Brooklawn and a graduate of Gloucester City HS Class of 1962.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Staff Sgt. Leroy O. Webster, 28, of Sioux Falls, S.D., died April 25 near Kirkuk, Iraq, after being shot while on a dismounted patrol.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

MARY BRAY BEGINNING BAND CONCERT

Mt. Ephraim, NJ – April 24, 2009 - Fourth grade Beginning Band students from the Mary Bray Elementary School in Mt. Ephraim presented a concert for the 3^rd and 4^th grades and their parents on April 21^st . The event took place in the Media Center.

There are currently twenty-three students in the Beginning Band, which is directed by Mary Manion. These enthusiastic young musicians have mastered about six different notes at this time. They presented a variety of traditional children’s songs including “Hot Cross Buns” and “French Song.” The drum section was highlighted as they played ”The Mary Bray Drum Cadence.” Mrs. Manion accompanied her students on the keyboard. The students took turns announcing each song over the microphone.

In keeping with a special custom, the band played through “Go Tell Aunt Rhodie” only to discover that the “real” Aunt Rhodie was indeed present in the audience! Mrs. Manion said that Aunt Rhodie makes a surprise visit every year. She winked as she denied reports that her own mother portrays the character. After the show, the students enjoyed refreshments provided by the NJEA Pride Committee. One offering was, of course, hot cross buns

BROOKLAWN TOWN WATCH UPDATE

Brooklawn official meetings of 2009 are underway, and being held at the community center.

They are going very well. We discussed several pertinent issues and had a lot of great ideas from the members. We are getting organized and our membership is growing, and with continued interest and input from our neighbors, this will be a great program.

Neighbors are really coming together on this, which will go a long way in making this program work for all of us.

Plans to Move Gloucester Catholic HS Proceed

As St. Mary School in Gloucester City celebrates its 150^th anniversary, the Camden Diocese still has plans to move Gloucester Catholic High School – originally owned by the parish and named St. Mary High School.

However, final plans will not move forward until the economy starts improving.

Ownership of the high school transferred to the diocese in the mid 20^th century, and for years there has been speculation about its future in Gloucester City.

Meanwhile,  in this weeks paper the Gloucester City News will honor St. Mary Elementary School – the oldest in the diocese – on its 150 years of excellence in education.

For your convenience, water and sewer payments are accepted at the Tax Office.  Senior Citizen’s  discounts are available, but must be applied for at the Tax Collector’s office.

Utility quarters are 1st quarter (Jan, Feb, Mar), 2nd quarter (Apr, May, Jun), 3rd quarter (Jul, Aug, Sept), 4th quarter (Oct, Nov, Dec).

Officer Down: Stun Gun Fails to Subdue Soldier, He Kills Two Deputies

NICEVILLE, Fla. -- Two deputies from a troubled sheriff's office in Florida had no warning a confrontation with a National Guard soldier accused of beating his wife would turn deadly, the sheriff said.

Deputies Burt Lopez and Warren "Skip" York used a stun gun to subdue Joshua Cartwright, but he was able to start shooting at them from the ground. Both Lopez and York died.

"Within seconds he sat up and began firing a weapon that came out of nowhere, it was somewhere on his body we assume," Okaloosa County's Interim Sheriff Ed Spooner told more than 300 sheriff's office employees who gathered Sunday night to pray and hear an explanation of the shootings.

An email I received this week from a mother of a 13-year-old who resides in Gloucester City was upsetting. She said her son was afraid to go outside on a nice day for fear he might be beaten up by one of the gangs that allegedly roam our community.  Jenny, not her real name writes,

Dear Mr. Cleary,

 My name is Jenny I have lived in Gloucester City for 10 years. When I first moved here I thought this was the cutest town. The people are nice everyone said good morning, how are you today. Now my 13- year- old son comes home from being out on this nice day and he tells me about the kids on the streets and at the parks. There are kids that are just taking over the city; it’s pretty bad when he's telling me he doesn’t want to walk around with his cell phone or I-pod because he is in fear.
"These kids" may try to take it from him. Just today he came home and was telling me about the gangs that are going on in this town, this is really sad. He said that the cops can’t or won’t even do anything to help them. He has friends that have been victims of these so called gangs. This to me is pretty sad I know that Gloucester City isn't the only town with these problems and I'm sure your aware of what is going on; I just need to vent a little to you on this maybe you can write up a story. I grew up in Gloucester City and have lived here for 64 years. And although the city has its problems like so many other small towns I wouldn’t want to live any place else. After reading Jenny’s email several times I was naturally concerned. Do we actually have gangs roaming the streets of our City beating up on kids stealing their cell phones and I-Pods?

Hometown Heroes: Spc. Micheaux Sanders of Goldsboro, NC

The Story:

Straight out of basic training, then-Spc. Sanders deployed to Iraq in 2003 in the early stages of the conflict--but it was not until April 4, 2004, that he faced his greatest challenge on the battlefield.

A platoon of 20 men was trapped deep within Sadr City, which was in the midst of an uprising. Sgt. Sanders’s tank crew and two others from his unit were called to aid the rescue.

The first two attempts failed, and during the second, Sgt. Sanders took a bullet through his left shoulder. Sanders waved the medics away, and instead hopped on another tank for a third rescue attempt, one which pushed through numerous firefights and impromptu roadblocks, such as burning tires and washing machines, to reach the stranded men.

Sanders told the Chicago Tribune later, “All I needed was a Band-Aid.” Because Sanders’s unit had previously been scheduled for transport, the tanks were carrying a minimum load of ammunition. At one point Sanders ran out of ammo and resorted to throwing rocks and anything else he could find at the enemy. Sanders was awarded the Silver Star in October 2004.

CSM Benjamin Moore, Jr., 43, of Waycross, Ga., died Apr 24 at Contingency Operating Base Speicher, Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident.

He was assigned to the 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

FAA Records Reveal 503 Wildlife Strikes at Philly Airport

The FAA had been under mounting pressure to release the records since the dramatic Hudson River splashdown of US Airways Flight 1549 in January. Carrying 155 people, the jet struck a flock of geese shortly after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport, knocking out both engines. Everyone aboard survived.

BOARD ADJUSTS EXTENDED BEAR SEASONS

PENNSYVANIA-The Board of Commissioners today gave final approval to the traditional three-day statewide black bear season before Thanksgiving, extended bear seasons in certain portions of the state concurrent with the first week of the firearms deer season and a two-day archery season.

While most bear seasons remain the same, extended hunting opportunities were added for WMUs 5B and 5C, in the southeastern portion of the state, and will run Dec. 2-5, Wednesday through Saturday, along with the concurrent firearms deer season in these units.  However, the Board removed WMU 3C, in the northeastern corner of the state, from the extended season, due to a declining bear population trend.

Pennsylvania’s extended modern-day bear hunting started in 2002, when bear hunters were given the opportunity to fill their tags the first week of the firearms deer season in Carbon, Monroe and Pike counties.  With the advent of the state’s 22 WMUs, the extended season was held in WMU 3D in 2003.  In 2004, the number of WMUs open for the concurrent deer/bear season was expanded, and the Board has made adjustments to those areas that are included or closed based on population trends.

Bear licenses must be purchased prior to the opening of the firearms deer season.

Cpl. Brad A. Davis, 21, of Garfield Heights, Ohio, died April 22 near Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

He was assigned to the 82^nd Brigade Support Battalion, 3^rd Brigade Combat Team, 82^nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

To my fellow residents,

 I was proud to see so many Union brothers and sisters at the City Council meeting  last night. I was moved by their show of respectful protest and solidarity. Often it is difficult to band together, even through a common cause, but seeing all of our City’s Union Locals coming together to express their discontent was impressive.

I was reminded of the recent contract fight that our Local, USW 10-1, went though with our employer, Sunoco, Inc. Our Grievance & Negotiating Committee was confronted at the bargaining table with threats of layoffs (211 proposed in total), wage reductions (by as much as 30%) and various other givebacks in benefits, with an overall reduction in our safety.

PA. DEER SEASONS TO BE SIMILAR FOR 2009-10

The Board of Game Commissioners gave final approval to a slate of deer seasons for the 2009-10 seasons that retains all of the opportunities provided in the past to address the goals of the agency’s deer management plan.  The only significant change was the Board’s vote to extend the late flintlock season for Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) 2B, 5C and 5D to run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 23.

Hunters in WMUs 2D, 2G, 3C and 4B will again have a five-day, antlered deer only season starting the Monday after Thanksgiving, followed immediately by seven days of concurrent, antlered and antlerless deer hunting. The proposed package retains the two-week (12-day) concurrent, antlered and antlerless season in the remaining 18 WMUs.
