MCFADDEN, WILLIAM J.
Of West Deptford, 84, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2007.
Bill was born in Philadelphia, and raised in Camden. He was a WWII veteran where he courageously defended our country in the U.S. AirForce. Bill graduated from Temple University and earned advanced degrees from Rutgers University and Glassboro State College.
He influenced the lives of so many young people either while coaching or officiating numerous sports, and as a teacher and principal in Gloucester and Camden counties. Away from his work, Bill was the first manager of the Greenfields Swim Club. He also enjoyed golf, skiing, watching the horse races but most of all he enjoyed time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren. Bill was a role model and will be remember for his quiet leadership and understanding ways. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Beloved husband of 60 years to Virginia (nee Civetta).
Loving father of Karen Shier, Kim (Robert) Horner, Kevin (Audrey) and Keith (Lee) McFadden. Dear brother of Peggy (James) Carmody and the late Joseph (Jessie) and John McFadden. Devoted grandfather of 9. Best friend for over 70 years to Alex 'Swoose' Chew.

Obit Milton Gottlieb, formerly of Audubon

on March 25, 2007, of Gibbsboro, formerly of Audubon Park. Age 96.
Beloved husband of 72 years of Jeannette S. (nee Woolston). Devoted father of Ione Wilson and her husband S. Robert, Donna Davis and her husband Ralph and Milton Gottlieb and his late wife Monica. Also survived by 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gottlieb was a member of St. Gregory's RC Church and the South Jersey Deaf Senior Citizens Club. Those who knew him will always remember he and his wife holding hands, as well as his smiling face and upbeat personality.

On March 25, 2007 (nee Hojnowski) of Cherry Hill, formerly of Bellmawr. Age 70.
Beloved wife of the late Stanley J. Chorzelewski. Loving mother of Stanley of Bell-mawr Brian of Sicklerville, Bruce of Gloucester City, Darren of Sewell, Eric of Bellmawr and Roseann Sorg of Cherry Hill. Caring sister of Jerome Hojnowski of Bell-mawr. Proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren. Survived by several nieces and nephews.
Theresa was a devout Catholic who rarely missed Sunday Mass. In her spare time she enjoyed dancing and arts and crafts. She loved to cook Polish foods during the holidays. Mrs. Chorzelewski's true passion was her family and grandchildren.

Gloucester City Seniors Assn. Finally Have A Home

Mayor William James (pictured) said today, Tuesday, that the Gloucester City Senior Citizens are the new owners of the Gloucester Heights Fire Hall. An agreement was reached today between all sides said James.

At last Thursday council meeting the public was informed that Gloucester City received a $400,000 grant from the state to build a new Senior Citizens Community Hall. But for some reason the previous administration did nothing with the money, they just let it sit there.

It wasn't until the new members of council (James, Brophy, Marchese) took office in January that movement on the project began.

James explained at Thursday meeting that the grant runs out in two months, which means the money would be lost. Time doesn't permit for getting proposals and construction so it was decided to look for an alternative, he said.

That alternative was found today.

More details on the specifics will follow as soon as they are released.

Questions for the Gloucester City School Board

Dear Mr. Cleary,

 

Since the Gloucester City School District's 2007-08 budget is going to be presented soon here are some timely questions that you should ask.

1. Why are there so many Facilitators in the District who teach no classes all day?
2. What exactly does Linda Lathrop do? Is she worth the money?
3. Why is it necessary to have two nurses in the building?
4. Does the Athletic Trainer at the high school teach any classes? What is he paid?
5. Why does all of the above get approved by the City Board of Education? Aren't they elected officials who are there to save the taxpayers of Gloucester City money?

Evidently there is much misappropriated money that the taxpayers should be made aware of.

College of NJ's Jessica Bonelli(GCHS) 7th in 200 meters event

West Long Branch, NJ… The College of New Jersey outdoor track and field teams kicked off the spring season in fine fashion placing in a host of events at the 12th Annual Monmouth University Season Opener on Saturday.

The meet featured schools from around New Jersey, which compete in various NCAA divisions.

Junior Jessica Bonelli (Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) finished seventh in the 200 meters in 26.39 seconds, while freshman Kristen Tricocci (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) added a seventh-place performance in the long jump with a distance of 5.10 meters, which was an ECAC qualifying mark.

Will he resign to become the state's sports authority?  Chatter about his future has been surrounding Senate prez. Codey for a good while and according to the NYTimes, these rumors have the half-life of uranium-235.   Taxes are the key to Corzine's budget, says the AP's Tom Hester.  They might go up if the budget committee (which meets on Wendesday) can't find the revenues elsewhere.  In any event, the Governor's original revenue projections seem to be falling a bit short.   Jobs in the provate sector are on the decline, but the state keeps hiring civil servants, says Gloucester Times reporter Trish Graber.  Could this be a major source of much of our budget mess?  Check it out for yourself!   Meanwhile....the Legislature can't seem to kick the (nasty) habit of dual office holding.  There are even suggestions of reducing the size of the legislature and making them all work full time.   It wouldn't be a Monday Roundup without a NJ pimp-related story, now would it?   One New Jersey job seeker who posted his resume on CareerBuilder got several nasty replies from a military recruiter. Aparently the job seeker is gay and the stinging replies told him that he should take his immoral lifestyle and "leave the United States."  If you're in the mood to read a scathing catfight, this is definitely the scoop for you.  All the emails are here.   One anecdotal note:  I am working on a video project with my liberal mates in Philly who are working hard to choose their next mayor.  The democratic candidates are wooing the gay vote bigtime.  The video captures GLTBTI-folks in Philly asking the candidates what's on their minds and what the expect from the next Mayor.  We interviewed about 50 gay and transgendered Philadelphians and the one question that came up over and over was "What are you -- as the next mayor -- gonna do to keep the gay community from moving to places like Collingswood."

SCAFFOLDING ACCIDENT IN MOUNT EPHRAIM

MOUNT EPHRAIM, CAMDEN COUNTY, NJ - Shortly before lunch time on Wednesday afternoon, March 21, 2007, the Mount Ephraim Police Department and the MEPRI EMS, BLS 4 duty-crew were summonsed to respond to 710 North Black Horse Pike for a fall victim.

County Fire Marshall (CFM-7) arrived on scene moments after dispatch and updated incoming EMS on the nature of the fall victim. Crews arrived to find a patient who fell approximately 15 feet to the ground after he lost his balance as he was standing on a 2 foot by 12 foot board at the top assembling the scaffolding. The MEPRI EMS duty-crew felt the half assembled scaffolding was un-stable and contacted the Camden County Communications Center (alarm room) to dispatch the fire department to assist at the scene.

The Mount Ephraim Fire Department, Station 45 arrived and raised a ladder to an adjacent light post and secured the section of scaffolding that was un-stable by tying it off to the existing unit and adjacent light post.

Virtua Paramedics, ALS (Advanced Life Support) 43 out of Camden City was dispatched shortly after the fire department arrived as the patient was complaining of difficulty breathing. Both units transported the patient to a local hospital without further injury. Barrington EMS (BLS-9) also assisted at the scene.

Vacant Dwelling Fire in Deptford

Deptford, NJ - In The New Sharon section, early at around 01:45hrs in the mourning, Deptford Station 9-4 and 9-3 were dispatched to the intersection of Delsea Dr. and Cattell road for a dwelling fire. Following the initial dispatch, a full district response was then toned. Prior to Deptford's first due engine company's arrival, it was stated through the radio that there was in fact a working fire at this address. Command had arrived and confirmed that transmission. After the arrival of the 1st due engine, firefighters went to work immediately and started making an attack on the fire. Supply lines were quickly established and multiple hand lines were put into service.

Stations 5-1 (Woodbury), and 15-1(Woodbury Heights) were also added to the job for the FAST team assignment as well. Crews on location worked quickly, and made excellent progress placing the job under control at around the 20 minute mark and completely extinguishing the fire about 40 minutes later. Recently Deptford has responded to several "suspicious fires" and this incident is no different. Currently this fire is under investigation by the Gloucester County Fire Marshall's Office as well as the County Prosecutors Office.

On March 22, 2007, (nee Ciechanowicz), age 86 years, of Haddon Heights and formerly of Gloucester City. Beloved wife of the late Alfred J. Wisniewski. Loving mother of Alfred J. (Antoinette) of Haddon Heights and John C. (Rita) of Shamong . Also survived by her sister-in-law Jean Stelmazsyk (Walt) of Cherry Hill, 2 nieces Carol Graver (Charles) and Lorraine Czerwinski, both of Shamong and 4 grandchildren, Alfred, Antoinette, Rita and Rosemarie.
Mrs. Wisniewski was born in Camden and has been a lifetime area resident. She was a member of the J and R Young at Heart Club in Runnemede.

on March 22, 2007, a resident of Bellmawr for 36 years. Age 89.
Beloved husband of Mary L. (nee Gezzi). Devoted father of George A., Jr. (Patricia). Dear brother of Lillian Hofbaur. Grandpop of Eric A. Christoffersen (Allyson).
Mr. Christoffersen served in the U.S. Army for four and a half years during WWII, mostly in Africa. He was a member of Bellmawr VFW Post #9563. He was also a carpenter for Local #393 in Gloucester City for 60 years.

Holt and Enterra collaborating at Port of Philadelphia

Enterra Solutions announced a strategic alliance with Holt Logistics Corp. Wednesday to provide services to improve operations and security at the Port of Philadelphia.

Yardley, Pa.-based Enterra said its software services "will integrate security, compliance and performance management functionality with a state-of-the-art system for responding to weapons of mass destruction and natural disasters" at the port's Packer Avenue Marine Terminal, which is operated by Holt subsidiary Greenwich Terminals. The services would also covering the surrounding distribution area and intermodal infrastructure.

Holt, based in Gloucester City, N.J., will provide services to protect the port's vital transportation systems.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Rutgers 53, Duke 52

Press of Atlantic City GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Rutgers' season was over, or so it seemed. Less than a second remained, and the ACC's player of the year was headed to the free-throw line to shoot mighty Duke back into the regional finals.

That's when dependable star Lindsey Harding missed a free throw, which would have tied the game. She then missed another and the Blue Devils' season was done and Rutgers advanced to the Greensboro Regional final.

"I believed it was our destiny," Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer said. "When she missed the second shot, I still believed."

Fender Skirts, Curb Feelers and Steering Knobs

I came across this phrase in a book yesterday "FENDER SKIRTS". A term I haven't heard in a long time and thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice.  Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you.  Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental.   When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with "emergency brake."  I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed."   Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the "running board" up to the house?   Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore - "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy.   "Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "world wide" for granted. This floors me.       On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.    When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply"expecting."    Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just "bra" now "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all.    I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation.  Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down!   Here's a word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffee maker." How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.  I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "Electrolux." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!"    Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening kids with castor oil anymore.   Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most "supper." Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.    Someone forwarded this to me. Collingswood Fire Department responds to oil spill on local waterway

At 1:15pm on Friday March 23rd, the Collingswood Fire Department, the Camden County Health Department, and Camden County HazMat responded to the Newton Creek for an oil spill on the waterway.

Apparently a local business while removing a heater spilled a large amount of heating oil which made it into the storm drain system and ultimately ending up in the Newton Creek.

Engine 1613, Rescue 161, Marine 16, BLS 1647 and Car 1601 were on location "booming" the creek in an effort to contain the spill until clean up crews could arrive.

The impact to the waterway and wildlife environment is currently unknown.

Collingswood battles vehicle fire

COLLINGSWOOD,NJ- On March 21, 2007, around 1 am, Engine 1613 and BLS 1647 were dispatched to 101 W. Browning Road for a vehicle fire.

Upon arrival, Engine 1613 reported a vehicle with heavy fire showing from the engine compartment.

1613 went in operation with a 1.75” handline to extinguish the blaze.

The Camden County Fire Marshals were called the scene to perform the investigation.

Gloucester City Fire Performs Ship-Board Rescue

GLOUCESTER CITY (CAMDEN COUNTY), NJ - On 3/19/2007 at 11:43 AM, Gloucester City Fire Department's Battalion 504, Squad 51 and BLS 558 (Group 3) were dispatched to North King Street and Essex Street - Holt Hauling and Warehousing to the water front for a report of an injured worker in the hull of a docked ship.

BLS 558 arrived first and met with a security officer who reported a male with unknown injuries down in the hull. BLS 558's crew along with additional on-site workers were lowered approximately 35-40 feet down into the ships hull by a crane.

BLS 558's crew accessed the patient who reported that he fell approximately 7 to 10 feet off of a piece of equipment. The patient was treated for his injuries, secured into a stokes basket and lifted from the ship by the crane to the ground.

The patient was transported by BLS 558 to a local hospital.

Senior Suzanne Fox (Glassboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic High School) led the Crusaders at the plate with 11 hits in 24 chances (.458), six doubles and eight RBIs.  Rhoads added two home runs and six RBIs.  Freshman Evans also impressed going 8-for-23 (.348) on the week with two doubles.  Williams paced the Crusaders on the mound finishing with a 3-1 record on the week and a 1.80 ERA, Crimi also held opponents at bay with a 1.42 ERA.

The Communications Workers of America, which represents a majority of state workers union, has extended the deadline for voting on its new contract by two weeks because of problems it has encountered with mail-in ballots.  If this is a hanging chad thing then I give up.  The contract is the same one that has caused so much controversy because of the relationship between Governor Corzine and CWA union president Carla Katz. Governor Corzine (that name comes up a lot in the news around here) appointed Kris Kolluri, who is already the transportation commissioner and chair of NJ Transit, to chair the New Jersey Turnpike and South Jersey Transportation authorities. US Attorney Chris Christie will speak to the Assembly Budget Committee regarding gang violence on April 12.  The committee issued the invitation yesterday.  I've been hearing some very disturbing things from co-workers about gangs in the high schools.  Anyone have anything they'd like to share on this topic? Three boys aboard a bus to Emily C. Reynolds Middle School in Mercer County took control of the vehicle yesterday when the driver became unconscious.  They managed to stop it safely at the side of the road.  Nice work guys.  That is beyond cool.  The bus company has not said whether it intends to offer the boys jobs as drivers, though there seems to be an opening now. The accussed firefighter (s) will not be prosecuted (fact or fiction?)

Mr. Cleary,

I n response to a recent "Letter to the Editor" in this past week's paper,
there is some information abound you might find interesting or wish to bring
to light.

It is currently rumored that the accused firefighter(s) will not be
criminally charged "as long as the money is paid back".  From my
understanding this is the second or third time this has happened.  Talk is
that the previous incident eluded being revealed in the media and also was
not criminally prosecuted.

It continues to amaze me that people give their own hard earned money of
their own free will and accord for the better of some only to be taken
advantage of by others unfit to hold the title they are entrusted.

I hope you investigate this and sort out what is fact.

$5,700 offered for the Return of Scotty

Lt. George Berglund of the Gloucester City Police Department announced today that the reward for information leading to the return of the Department's  K-9 dog has increased to $5,700! 

Berglund said, "A Philadelphia businessman has offered $2,500 and an out of town resident has offered $1,000.

The 80-pound, midnight-black German shepherd has been missing since early Saturday morning after the roof of his kennel collapsed under the weight of snow and ice from Friday's winter storm.

The kennel is in Patrolman Stephen Burkhardt's back yard. Burkhardt is Scotty's handler.

Berglund said the department is hopeful that a citizen took Scotty into his home without having seen television reports or reading about the missing dog in the newspaper. Several law enforcement agencies in the area have been helping local police in the search.

Berglund said, "We haven't had any luck."

The 3-year-old German Shepherd is black, with some brown on his tail, is wearing a silver choke chain. The dog is friendly with people, however police warn that if you put him in your car, then try to take him out, he could become aggressive because he thinks that he's working.

Letters/What is Wrong with this Picture?

Per this week's Gloucester City News, they are now hiring someone to fill some of the duties of the Confidential Assistant to the Mayor.  This person will do less than the Assistant and get paid close to as much.

 

How do I know?  Because I was the Confidential Assistant to the Mayor.  Not only did I do the duties listed in that ad, but I was at every Council Meeting taking minutes, the Finance Committee meetings taking minutes and helping with the budget, and a member of the Celebrations Committee.  I also assisted the Mayor and Council with follow-up information from these meetings.

 

I helped Public Works run the Marina including all the paperwork and advertisement.  I was also the Administrator's assistant and was the back up to the City Clerk's office.  I supported the computer network in the Municipal Building, built and up kept the web content on the City website, and sent the e-letters for events and meetings of the City.  I also created and kept updated a web calendar of community events.

 

I planned events for the city and helped the Community Development/UEZ Director whenever possible.  I was an outreach person to community organizations and businesses. 

 

I had even been recently appointed as the Planning Board Secretary.  All for less than $40,000.  Now they are going to hire someone to do a small portion of this for $30,000.  What is wrong with this picture?  I had a bad title that didn't even begin to describe what I did at the City.  The new Mayor and the new Council didn't even take the time to meet with me to find out what I did before eliminating my position.  Mr. Marchese wrote in the Gloucester City News that your job shouldn't be affected by who you vote for.  I do believe that mine was.

Baseball-Stockton's John O'Hara (Gloucester Catholic High School) was the NJAC Rookie of the Week after earning a win and a save in a pair of relief appearances during Stockton's trip to Florida. O'Hara worked two innings of hitless relief and struck out three in a 6-4 win over Bridgewater (Mass.) and recorded a scoreless ninth to earn his first career save in Stockton's 2-0 win over Washington College.

Richard Stockton's Amit Shah (Maple Shade) was named the NJAC Pitcher of the Week after scattering three hits in eight innings in a 2-0 shutout of Washington College in Cocoa, Fla. The right-hander, who surrendered just one extra-base hit in the victory, improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.

Mutant Police Dog Remains Missing

So where is Scotty, the missing police dog? The dog -- who apparently has x-ray vision -- went missing from his police handler's home in Gloucester City on Sunday.

Naturally, pretty much everyone in New Jersey is now searching for him, praying for his recovery, wondering if he's the reincarnated Barbaro, etc.

So where's the dog? He might have just joined another pack of dogs, unnoticed:

"Maybe someone will notice a dog in a backyard who wasn't there before - and report it."

But this isn't mere Barbaroism here. There's a $2,000 reward for the dog's return. Heck, I'm heading over the bridge right now.
