SOUTH AMBOY MAN EARNS TOP HONORS AT GOVERNOR'S FISHING TOURNAMENT
TRENTON - An angler from South Amboy hooked a 33 ¾-inch striped
bass and reeled in the prestigious Governor's Cup at the 15th annual
Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament at Island Beach State Park in
Berkeley Township.
By catching the biggest fish of the day, David Salvagno, bested 925
anglers who competed Sunday in the annual event, which raises funds for
marine-resource conservation and education in and around Island Beach
State Park and encourages youngsters and adults to learn more about surf
fishing. More than two dozen other anglers also won prizes in various
species categories. All 115 entries were judged for overall length of
the fish.
As grand-prize winner, Salvagno will have his name engraved on the
Governor's Cup, permanently on display at Island Beach State Park, and
received a plaque and two rod-and-reel combinations. In 2005, Jackson
Township resident Carl Kogel earned top honors with a 34 ½-inch
bluefish.
