What has happened to the Monmouth Street Business Street? Top’s Pizza had sold out to another business, which is now “closed up.” The Dollar Store has closed their doors. Gloucester Jewelers “closed up,” and the Camera Shop “closed up” and is currently being rented.
What is it that forces these business owners to relocate or move out? Are the residents of Gloucester patronizing these stores, or has Wal-Mart stolen any and all small business owner’s hopes and dreams?
Currently a businessperson is operating a “consignment” shop where the Camera Shop existed. The shop owner has worked diligently in making her store appealing.
There are clothing items, jewelry, and home décor to name just some of the items you’ll find when you walk into the very nicely decorated store. Yes, the items are used but the shop owner has taken pride in her selection and I’m proud to say I have made purchases for both my grandchildren and myself. I now have heard she is in danger of losing her lease.
Why aren’t the residents of Gloucester patronizing the local businesses? Why can’t the parents of our school age children first try a local “consignment” shop before heading to Wal-Mart or Big “K” to make their purchase? They’ll be surprised at what they’ll find.
I am sick and tired of reading the Courier Post articles about all the surrounding communities’ re-development of their business districts? Maple Shade, Westville, Collingswood, Merchantville are just a few of the towns who seriously care about their business district’s future growth.
When is Gloucester’s Economic Development Department going to get serious and solve the problem of failed businesses in the Monmouth Street “business district”?
