COUNCIL SPECIAL
FLIP FLOP HAMBURGER
WITH LOST FREEDOM FRIES
Louis Achilles, owner of Grabbes Restaurant on Delsea Drive in Westville has posted a new lunch special on his tavern sign called a “Council Special Flip Flop Hamburger with Lost Freedom Fries”.
Achilles an outspoken critic of the use of eminent domain in his community has been fighting against a
controversial $50 million condominium proposal. The project is called the Big Timber Creek redevelopment plan.
Under the plan his restaurant could be taken as part of the redevelopment area. Achilles is unwilling to sell his property and has voiced his opposition against the use of eminent domain. In fact earlier in the summer his restaurant was the site of a rally by a group of 40 supporters who carried Against Eminent Domain signs and waved American flags at passing motorists.
The Big Timber Creek redevelopment plan was adopted by Borough Council on Wednesday August 23, 2006 by a 5-1 vote. Republican Sue Rodgers was the lone nay vote while Democrat Councilman James Pennington Jr. was absent.
Pennington along with councilman Woodrow Dooley III, who were elected in November, ran on a platform that was against the use of eminent domain. Since then both councilmen have changed their minds and now are in favor of the redevelopment.
The ordinance is just one step in the process that had to be approved before any further action could be taken on the proposal. Fieldstone Associates, of Doylestown, Pa., is the designated redeveloper.
